The Union Budget 2026–27 marks a significant step forward for India’s health research and innovation ecosystem. The announcement of the ₹10,000 crore Biopharma Shakti initiative underscores the Government of India’s commitment to strengthening the biopharmaceutical value chain—from research to global translation.

A key highlight is the establishment of an India Clinical Trial Sites Network, comprising over 1,000 nationally accredited clinical trial sites, to be developed under the aegis of ICMR. This landmark initiative will enhance India’s capacity to generate high-quality, globally acceptable clinical trial data, accelerate evidence-based innovation, and position the country as a trusted global hub for clinical research.

Complemented by a 24% increase in the Department of Health Research budget, these measures will support indigenous, affordable MedTech and pharmaceutical innovation, AI-enabled health solutions, and pandemic preparedness, advancing science-led, inclusive growth in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat.
