ICMR Headquarters hosted a special talk by Prof. K.M. Venkat Narayan, Executive Director, Emory Global Diabetes Research Center and elected member National Academy of Medicine, on “A Strategic Framework for Research – The Example of Diabetes in Indians”.

The talk highlighted that India is the world’s diabetes capital with over 200 million people affected, more than half of whom remain undiagnosed. While nearly a quarter of the global diabetes burden is in India, only about 1% of global diabetes research involves Indian populations. Diabetes in Indians often occurs at younger ages and lower body weights, even among those with normal weight, and about 70-80% of type 2 cases are due to poor insulin secretion.

Key drivers include impaired insulin secretion, low muscle mass, and liver fat linked to unhealthy diets and low physical activity. Prof. Narayan emphasized that with improved access and organized, high-quality care, deaths and complications can be substantially reduced.

He also highlighted the urgent need for India-specific research to effectively tackle the diabetes epidemic and its massive health and economic costs.

WHO Applauds ICMR-Funded Study on Nutrition’s Critical Role in Combating TB
A landmark study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), conducted in Jharkhand, has demonstrated the powerful impact of improved nutrition in reducing tuberculosis (TB) cases and fatalities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized this research, incorporating its findings into updated global guidance on TB control—marking a significant milestone in India’s contributions to global health policy.
As TB continues to challenge many communities, integrating nutritional support into standard TB care can be a game-changer. ICMR remains committed to advancing such evidence-based interventions and strengthening India’s leadership in TB research and public health.
Together, let’s nourish health — and ensure a TB-free future.

India moves closer to innovative cancer care! An ICMR-funded Phase 1 trial led by CMC Vellore, published in the journal Molecular Therapy Oncology, demonstrates that CAR-T therapy, which uses a patient’s own T cells to fight cancer, can be safely manufactured and infused at point of care in India at low cost.

A 1st for India! CAR-T cells produced and infused at Point of Care show promising results:
- 100% remission in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
- 50% remission in large B-cell lymphoma
- 80% of patients remain disease-free at 15 months

offers a high-impact model for CAR-T delivery:
- Nearly 90% less cost than global averages
- 9-day production using automated, in-hospital systems
- Fresh infusions enable faster response and better outcomes

This trial redefines how cancer therapy can be delivered - efficiently, affordably, and close to patients. India is leading the way in developing next-generation, in-house biotherapies with global relevance.
