A cancer that is largely preventable still claims ~80,000 lives of women in India every year.
Cervical cancer remains the second most common cancer among women in India, with nearly 1.2 lakh new cases diagnosed annually.
Persistent infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV)—especially types 16 and 18—is responsible for most cervical cancer cases. The good news is that the HPV vaccine is highly effective (93–100%) in preventing these infections.
The nationwide HPV vaccination campaign launched by the Government of India on February 28, 2026 is an important step toward protecting the next generation.
With vaccination, regular screening, and timely treatment, cervical cancer can become one of the most preventable cancers.
Let us spread awareness and encourage HPV vaccination.
