Technical Assistance and Research for Indian Nutrition and Agriculture (TARINA) is a consortium that connects policy-focused academics from diverse disciplines with impact-focused non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and development partners to address the complex problem of malnutrition in India. Through its leadership and expertise, the consortium aims to promote a more diversified food system that enhances the availability and affordability of nutrient-rich food for the rural poor. TARINA was founded under a US $13.4 million grant awarded to the Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition (TCI) from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

A few key insights from Tata-Cornell Institute’s latest report on the impact of on Indian prices, 'Pandemic Prices: COVID-19 Price Shocks & Their Implications for Security in India' have been reported by leading English daily newspaper, The Hindu.

The study found that the prices of -rich foods like pulses increased as a result of the nationwide lockdown instituted in response to the pandemic, while the prices of staple grains like and were relatively undisturbed.

'Indian government should refocus its policy on the production of diverse, nutrient-rich crops to reduce and ,' wrote Tata-Cornell Institute director, Prof Prabhu Pingali in a latest op-ed featured in The Daily Pioneer.

Pingali argued that India’s focus on grains like and has contributed to stubbornly high rates of malnutrition in the country.

How will millions of who returned home during India’s lockdown impact ? What can govt possibly do to mitigate its negative consequences?

Sharing his insights on the subject, Tata-Cornell Institute, associate director, Bhaskar Mittra points out that the number of who have returned home is too large to be accommodated in the rural sector unless additional investments are made in rural India by the government and private sectors. He suggests that the Government of India must act quickly so that shattered dreams can be rebuilt while helping to revive the sector.

"The discussion must move on from just feeding to feeding enough nutritious to and ," remarked Prof Prabhu Pingali, director, Tata-Cornell Institute
at the organized today at 5:30 pm by Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP) where he was the guest speaker.

While Prof Pingali appreciated the recent schemes such as and enhancing supply for the scheme for addressing the problems of migrant workers, he underlined the fact that there has to be a re-orientation of policies and consistent follow up at the ground level for effective implementation.

In a recently published report, researchers from Tata-Cornell Institute show that ’s rigorous has driven up the price of produce, limiting people’s ability to afford a diverse diet.

In the study, Pandemic Prices: Price Shocks from COVID-19 and Their Implications on in India, TCI analyzed the average weekly price of cereal grains, vegetables, pulses (the edible seeds of plants in the legume family, such as beans and peas) and eggs in 11 major metropolitan cities across India between March 1 and May 31, comparing them to the 2019 prices and the weeks before the lockdown.
