Many people think a normal blood test can easily detect thalassemia, but that’s not always true.

Thalassemia carriers often appear iron deficient, and because iron deficiency is so common, the condition can be missed or confused on routine reports.

That’s why a specialised test called HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) is recommended. Every newly-wed couple or anyone planning a pregnancy, should consider HPLC along with other routine tests to rule out thalassemia carrier status early.
