I have seen so many people being recommended digestive enzymes for their digestive problems.
) In theory this makes sense right? Because digestive enzymes break down food but the science is not that straightforward.

Digestive enzymes work specifically on specific food elements. And most of the time IBS is not caused by an enzyme deficiency so adding more enzymes in is not going to resolve symptoms because it was not the issue in the first place. And some enzymes contain FODMAPs so it could cause more issues.

The two enzymes I do use regularly are lactase to break down lactose but this is for people on the low
FODMAP diet who need to avoid lactose or those with a diagnosed lactose intolerance. And the second enzyme I use is alpha galactosidase as this breaks down fructans and GOS - but most people tolerate a good amount of this without issues so it’s not always needed - we need specifics.

Simple home tips to beat the smog/ pollution -

1. Soonth, gul and ghee ke bite size laddoo - take equal amounts of dry ginger, jaggery and ghee, mix it well and roll it into small balls. Start and end your day with one. Also helpful to have one after you have returned home after spending long time outdoors.

- prevents inflammation and flu
- keeps sinuses clear
- smoothens digestion

2. Sugar cane - either chew on it and spit the fibre out (in the correct places of course) or drink it like a fresh juice. Preferably a mid meal, had before noon.

- cleanses and helps detoxify the liver
- micronutrient dense so boosts the immune system
- helps beat lethargy and low moods due to smog

3. Milk, kesar, haldi and soaked sabja - like a night cap. Heat milk and add kesar and haldi while still on the boil. Add 1tsp of Soaked sabja or tulsi seeds after you pour it in a cup, can also add powdered jaggery to taste.

- volatile oils from kesar prevent skin and hair damage
- sabja or tulsi seeds for beating infections, allergies and bloating
- haldi and milk is a potent and well known recovery and anti-inflammatory combo

Other tips -

-Don’t give up on exercise, just shift it to indoors
- Stay well hydrated
- Vit D, Vit B12 and carotene supplements are helpful in these situations.
