A Silent Warning Sign Most People Miss

Noticed blood in your stool and brushing it off as piles or acidity?
⚠️ That could be a dangerous mistake.
Blood in stool is one of the earliest warning signs of colon cancer, and it often appears without pain.
🚨 Early signs you should never ignore:
• Fresh red or dark blood in stool
• Persistent change in bowel habits
• Unexplained weight loss
• Feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely
• Fatigue or weakness due to anemia
Colon cancer is highly treatable when detected early, but delayed diagnosis can be life-threatening.
👉 If bleeding continues for more than a few days, don’t self-diagnose.
👉 A simple test like colonoscopy can save your life.
Early action = Better outcomes.
Listen to your body. It speaks before it screams.
📌 Awareness today can prevent regret tomorrow.

👨‍⚕️ Fun hospital fact:
A study tested how steady different healthcare workers’ hands are using a children’s buzz-wire game.
Surgeons came out on top. Most of us kept our hands steady, while only about half of the physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff could manage it.
But here’s the twist: almost half of the surgeons also shouted out while playing.
Physicians didn’t do as well with the steady hands… but at least they kept their mouths shut 😅
So yes, surgeons can cut with precision — but sometimes our words cut deeper than the scalpel.

I recently had the privilege of joining colleagues from around the world at the 10th Bangladesh International Cancer Congress (BICC 2025) in Dhaka.
Speaking on "Optimizing Surgical Candidacy for HCC in Resource-Limited Settings" gave me an opportunity to discuss a challenge many of us navigate daily: providing the best possible care for our patients when resources don't always match needs.
Conversations with clinicians who face different healthcare realities yet share the same commitment to their patients gives insights and approaches that we might not see from within our own context.
Hepatocellular carcinoma affects so many patients in regions where access to advanced treatments remains limited. Thoughtful patient selection, pragmatic decision-making, and multidisciplinary collaboration become even more critical to ensure safe surgery and meaningful outcomes.
Grateful to the Oncology Club Bangladesh for bringing together this remarkable community and for their exceptional hospitality. These exchanges of knowledge and experience are what move us forward.

Gallbladder Cancer Is More Common in North India — Awareness Can Save Lives.

Gallbladder cancer is seen more frequently in North India, particularly among women, yet awareness about the disease remains limited. Early symptoms are often mistaken for common gallbladder problems, leading to delays in diagnosis.
Possible warning signs include:
• Recurrent pain on the right side of the abdomen
• Nausea
• Jaundice
• Unintentional weight loss
Gallbladder cancer can grow and spread early, which makes timely medical evaluation especially important.
Assessment typically involves imaging and careful clinical review. In centres with experience in gallbladder and biliary tract cancers, surgical treatment is planned according to the stage and extent of disease, including approaches for both early and complex cases.
Persistent gallbladder-related pain should not be ignored. Seeking medical advice early can make a meaningful difference.

Stomach & Esophageal Cancers Are Rising — Know the Warning Signs.

Unhealthy eating habits, late-night meals, smoking, alcohol use, and long-standing acidity are contributing to a rise in stomach and esophageal cancers, including among younger adults.
Early symptoms may include:
• Difficulty swallowing
• A persistent burning sensation
• Bloating
• Vomiting
• Unintended weight loss
Because these symptoms can resemble common acidity or indigestion, they are often ignored. This delay can allow serious disease to progress unnoticed.
Proper evaluation may involve endoscopy, biopsy and imaging. In centres with dedicated upper gastrointestinal expertise, treatment is planned carefully and tailored to the individual, often involving specialized surgical approaches when required.
Gastric symptoms are the body’s way of communicating that something may be wrong. Paying attention and seeking timely medical advice can lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes.

Liver Tumors Often Show No Symptoms — Early Tests Matter.

Liver cancers are often “silent” because they may grow for a long time without clear early symptoms. This makes regular monitoring especially important for people at higher risk, including those with fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, alcohol-related liver disease, or viral hepatitis.
Warning signs, when they do appear, may include:
• Persistent fatigue
• Abdominal swelling
• Jaundice
• Loss of appetite
Because these symptoms often develop late, routine checkups play a key role in early detection.
Evaluation of liver cancer involves careful clinical assessment, blood tests and imaging. In centres with dedicated liver expertise, treatment may include locoregional treatments such as RFA, MWA, TACE, TARE and advanced surgical techniques for both primary and metastatic liver tumours, planned according to each patient’s condition.
Simple tests such as an ultrasound or blood work can sometimes identify problems early, before serious damage occurs.
The liver performs vital functions every day. Protecting it through awareness and timely care can make a meaningful difference.

Colore**al Cancer Is 90% Curable When Detected Early.

Colore**al cancer is often highly treatable when detected early. In many cases, it develops slowly from polyps that can be identified and removed before they become cancerous.
Screening tests such as colonoscopy play a key role in early detection, sometimes years before symptoms appear.
Possible warning signs include:
• Blood in the stool
• Unexplained weight loss
• Persistent fatigue
• Changes in bowel habits
These symptoms can have many causes, but they should always be evaluated by a doctor.
Treatment for colore**al cancer typically involves surgery and may include other therapies. In experienced centres, surgical care is planned with a focus on organ preservation, smoother recovery, and improved long-term outcomes, tailored to each patient’s condition.
Awareness and timely screening remain among the most effective tools we have. Early evaluation and expert care can significantly influence outcomes.
