I, regularly come across parents who feel extremely stressed about the fact that their child doesn’t respond, react or play in the way other children do.
I also understand that they are constantly loaded with all sorts of advice on what a good parent looks like.
This again leads to excessive stress and may trigger a ‘power struggle’ between them and the child.
When a parent constantly demands and corrects their child, it is but obvious for the child to either act out or close off.

How can we prevent this??

- By joining our child’s world
- By engaging with them for the joy of it and because we want them to fulfill our demands
- By celebrating small wins
- By sighing with them when they make mistakes
- By encouraging them to keep trying
- By using techniques that the child understands and likes and helping him/her build upon them

Uninvolved parents tend to have little knowledge of what their children are doing. There tend to be few rules.

Uninvolved parents may be neglectful but it's not always intentional. A parent with mental health issues or substance abuse problems, for example, may not be able to care for a child's physical or emotional needs on a consistent basis.

At other times, uninvolved parents lack knowledge about child development. And sometimes, they're simply overwhelmed with other problems, like work, paying bills, and managing a household.

Your parenting style can affect everything from how much your child weighs to how s/he feels about himself/herself.

Authoritarian Parenting focuses on obedience, punishment over discipline.

Identifying your existing style can help to understand the consequences of your actions and words and be instrumental in adapting better and healthier strategies as a parent.

Watch this space to understand the impact of this style on your child’s behavior and their self-image

A child’s behavior is of utmost concern to the parents.

Many a times, parents feel helpless and/or lost when they do not really understand how to modify an undesirable behavior that their child is engaging in.

It always helps to look within…this week we shall be focusing on different parenting styles and their manifestation and the eventual effects that these styles have on the development as well as behavior of the children.

A child’s attachment style is a result of several ‘small’ experiences. The way a child’s distress is handled has a major impact on his/her responses in the future and during their adulthood.

It’s not always over-dramatic negative responses such as hitting, shouting or isolating that leads to the development of insecure attachment style. Even the more subtle responses such as ‘Not now’, ‘I am busy’, ‘Don’t Cry all the time’, when used consistently for a substantial amount of time can manifest into insecure attachment style.

Understanding this cycle can help us understand how and where can we break the pattern and take a step towards

The way a parent is feeling gets directly mirrored onto a child.
Many parents focus on the mental and physical well-being of the child, ignoring their own well-being. This can have an adverse effect on the child.
Experiencing parental stress is common among parents of children of all ages and is elevated in families characterized by stressors such as poverty, mental health problems, and developmental problems.

Identifying and working on our emotions can help us a ton to attune with our children in a rather healthy manner.
