We sometimes ignore behaviours like throwing, shouting, or minor disruptions in children with ADHD or autism because:
1. To avoid reinforcing the behaviour- Many challenging behaviours are done to gain attention. When adults react strongly, the child may learn that the behaviour “works.” Planned ignoring removes this reward.
2. To reduce escalation- Immediate reactions can increase emotional intensity. Staying calm and neutral helps the child settle more quickly.
3. To focus on teaching positive behaviours- Instead of giving attention to unwanted actions, adults can praise and reinforce the behaviours we want to see—like asking for help or using calming strategies.
4. To support self-regulation
Ignoring minor behaviours gives children space to practise calming themselves without relying on adult reactions.
Planned ignoring should only be used for safe, low-risk behaviours. Dangerous or harmful actions should never be ignored.
