Sai Swayam Society - Empowering the Speech and Hearing Impaired
SSS is a PAN India NGO focusing of the Empowerment of Speech and Hearing Impaired individuals through Education, Skill Training & Job Placement.
For Accessibility & Inclusion, Sign Language Awareness is spread through Workshops. SIGNS- SKILLS- STRENGTH Sai Swayam Society is an NGO that started with the sole purpose of taking forward the dreams of Meera Bhatia’s (General Secretary of Sai SwayamSociety) parents, Mr Suraj Kanchanbaras and Mrs Mohini Kanchanbaras, a couple with hearing and speech disabilities. Founded in December 2006, with active support from few likeminded social activists and dedicated professionals working as Government servants, this institution for Meera is homage to the endless efforts made by her parents towards the upliftment of the hearing impaired. Meera’s father, Mr Suraj Kanchanbaras, has been associated with the cause for more than 20 years now. His entire life is woven around enabling the hearing and speech impaired people. His love for cricket made him the captain for India Cricket team for speech and hearing impaired for a span of 10 years wherein he represented the team at National and International tournaments. Meera’s mother, Late Mrs Mohini Kanchanbaras, dedicated sixteen years of his life as a handicraft trainer in Delhi Foundation for Deaf women, her work and sheer dedication towards this cause made her achieve the National Award in 1998. Growing up in such an environment, sign language became Meera’s first language; she used to look upto her parents for the progress they made in the careers in spite of having speech and hearing disability. Their work, dedication, compassion and commitment towards the betterment of the speech and hearing impaired has kept Meera in awe till now and has in return motivated her to take up this cause. Meera started her career in this field as a presenter for hearing impaired news at Doordarshan and presently she handles the school and looks after the recruitment, fund raising and alliance aspect.

The Story of Signs-Skills-Strength #EmpoweringTheDeafAndMute
Sai Swayam Society for the Speech & Hearing Impaired (SHI) is a Non Government Organization focusing on Empowerment of the community through Education, Skill Training & Livelihood Generation. SSS focuses on "Signs- Skills- Strength” to transform lives. With an inclusive team of Deaf and Hearing Staff Members, we practice Inclusion & Accessibility right from the start, ensuring that Deaf individuals are key stakeholders in our organisation.
Mrs. Meera Bhatia founded SSS in 2006 to forward the struggles and achievements of her SHI parents. Her mother trained & empowered Deaf women under the Delhi Foundation of Deaf Women & later received the National Award as a role model Person with Disabilities. Her father retired as the Treasurer of the All India Association of the Deaf & represented India as the Deaf Indian Cricket Team’s captain for 10 years during his younger days. This institution for Meera is a tribute to the struggles and achievements of Deaf Indians from the first 50 years post independence.SSS is a medium to revolutionise the lives of the upcoming deaf generations.
With 9 extended centres and a hostel facility in Delhi, SSS reaches out to Deaf individuals across India. SSS is an empaneled skill training partner with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, GoI. It is also a PMKVY skill training centre. Over 12,000 Deaf individuals have been placed across India in over 170 corporate companies.
SSS conducts remedial classes for school students from deaf government schools. Also, year long education & fee support is provided to drop out students who get enrolled in NIOS. We have reached out to over 1000 Deaf students.
Since Sign Language is the medium of communication for the SHI, SSS conducts Indian Sign Language Workshops for hearing individuals to generate awareness. Special focus on Police, Lawyers & Doctors. 18,000 people have been taught so far.Certification Workshops in affiliation with Rehabilitation Council of India are also conducted.
Our Founder is a recipient of the prestigious Nation Award, Helen Keller Award & Jazbaa Award for providing employment for Person with Disabilities.
