A Historic First for Global Robotic Surgery
Today, we had the privilege of performing the first-ever robotic telesurgery procedure for resectable colore**al cancer in India and the first robotic telesurgery by Apollo Hospitals.
This milestone was achieved across 2,200 km, connecting the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai with the SSI Headquarters in Gurgoan using the SSI Mantra 3 robotic surgery platform. Two surgical teams were deployed at both ends to ensure flawless ex*****on. Prof Venky Munikrishnan was at Gurugram on the SSI Mantra console performing the Anterior Resection for re**al cancer surgery, while the bedside team of Dr Sudeepta Kumar Swain & Dr Senthil Ganapathi with our Colore**al fellows Dr Aarti & Dr Prashanth were at the APCC Chennai with the patient. The procedure was completed flawlessly with non perceptible time lag or any challenges.
This was not just a case — it was the longest distance telesurgery procedure ever performed for colore**al cancer in the country: a distance of over 2200 kms. The procedure went seamlessly, proving that the technology, expertise, and teamwork needed to make telesurgery safe and effective are here.
For me and my team, this is the natural next step after completing over 1,000 robotic colore**al surgeries. For Apollo, it represents something bigger: a commitment to democratising robotic surgery, making advanced cancer care accessible not only across India but globally.
Carrying forward the Apollo DNA and legacy of innovation, today marks the beginning of a new chapter — one where distance will no longer define who gets access to world-class surgical care.
Huge thanks to the Apollo Leadership and Senior management for the support to push the boundaries in clinical excellence.
Special thanks to the SSI and APCC operation/technical team for their amazing support.
Forever grateful
