Toothbrushes miss cleaning 35% of your teeth surfaces! Flossing is important to reach the areas which are not cleaned by toothbrush. The surfaces on the sides of the teeth where teeth meet are not cleaned by toothbrush. These are the areas where bacteria hide. Floss these bacteria away atleast once a day.

We all want best for our children. Please read this post to know about which toothpaste is best for your children younger than 6 years.

Use of fluoride toothpaste is effective in reducing cavities in young children. However, they tend to swallow some amount of toothpaste while brushing. Ingesting pea-sized amounts or more can lead to mild fluorosis in permanent teeth.

Therefore, recommendations are to use small amounts of fluoride toothpaste in young children:
1. a smear or rice-grain-size of fluoride toothpaste in children younger than 3 years
2. a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste in 3-6 years old
This requires parental supervision to monitor the amount being used.

There are many low fluoride toothpastes available in our country. They have a reduced risk of fluorosis due to lower concentrations of fluoride. However, they may not be as effective as the 1000 ppm fluoride toothpastes in cavity protection- the evidence for their effectiveness is lacking.

There are some fluoride-free toothpastes also available in the market. These help in addressing the concern of risk of fluorosis. However, they do not provide the anti-cavity protection of fluoride but may be used in children less than 2 years who are unable to spit toothpaste.

The decision to use fluoride toothpaste should be based on the unique needs of your child. Please visit your dentist to know about your child's unique needs. Make an informed choice and keep yourself and your family healthy.
