To protect the eyes from the harmful effects of prolonged screen time, several practical tips can be incorporated into daily routines. Following these measures can help minimize eye strain, dryness, and discomfort associated with extensive computer and mobile device usage.
Effective Eye Protection Tips
• Use the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to let eyes relax.
• Blink frequently: Blinking keeps the eyes moist and helps prevent dryness, which is common during continuous screen usage.
• Adjust screen settings: Lower screen brightness, increase contrast, and increase text size to reduce eye strain.
• Ensure proper lighting: Work in a well-lit, but not overly bright environment to minimize glare and reduce the need for the eyes to work harder.
• Keep a safe distance: Position screens about 20–30 inches (an arm’s length) from the eyes, and make sure the top of the screen is at or just below eye level.
• Reduce glare: Use anti-glare matte screen filters and, if necessary, anti-reflective coatings on eyeglasses.
• Use blue light filters: Use blue light filtering apps, built-in night modes, or specialized glasses to decrease blue light exposure, especially at night.
• Take regular breaks: In addition to the 20-20-20 rule, stand up, stretch, and rest the eyes for a few minutes each hour.
• Use artificial tears: If dryness or irritation is a problem, consider using lubricating eye drops or maintaining room humidity with a humidifier.
• Limit screens before bed: Reduce or avoid screen use 1–2 hours before sleeping to prevent blue light’s impact on sleep cycles.
• Regular eye exams: Schedule routine visits with an eye care professional to monitor eye health and address any symptoms early.
Incorporating these recommendations can significantly reduce eye discomfort and help maintain healthy vision during frequent or extended screen time.

Selfie takers tend to centre the images to align horizontally with their left eye, according to new research.

The study, which was published in PLOS One, analysed more than 4000 Instagram selfies from the US, Brazil, Russia, Germany and Thailand.

Researchers from City, University of London, the University of Parma and University of Liverpool contributed to the work.

They discovered that selfie takers tended to centre the image slightly to the left of one of their eyes, usually their left eye.

The trend was seen across the different countries sampled through the study.

Professor Christopher Tyler, from City, University of London, said that the research replicated an earlier finding that painters tend to centre one eye in portraits.

“The tendency to centre a feature of particular interest in the frame presumably derives from the fact that we humans have a single focal region of high resolution in the centre of our retinas, the fovea, providing a natural point of attraction for this largely unsuspected tendency in composing the portrait,” he highlighted.
