One of my clients kept telling herself,
“It’s okay, I’ll sleep later, I just need to finish this one last thing.”
She thought she simply had a “busy schedule.”
But her body was interpreting it as survival mode.
When she came to me, she was eating clean, walking daily, doing “everything right” —
yet she still felt exhausted, bloated, emotional, and stuck.
Here’s what I explained to her about what actually happens when you don’t sleep enough 👇
1️⃣ Ghrelin and leptin get imbalanced
Your hunger hormone rises, your fullness hormone drops, and cravings for sugar, caffeine, and carbs take over — even after eating full meals.
2️⃣ Cortisol stays high
Your body believes you’re under threat. Fat burning shuts down, and fat storage (especially belly fat) switches on.
3️⃣ Insulin resistance increases
Even healthy foods get stored as fat because your cells stop responding efficiently.
4️⃣ Thyroid slows down
Low sleep signals your body to conserve energy, slowing metabolism and increasing fatigue.
5️⃣ Your nervous system can’t reset
Without deep sleep, the stress loop never breaks. Your body never feels safe enough to release stored weight.
When we worked on her sleep and balanced her cortisol through simple daily habits and snack pairings, her cravings reduced, her energy came back, and her body finally began to respond again.
If you’re doing everything “right” but your body still feels stuck,
it’s not your willpower, it’s your root cause.
