Runny nose is not always a sign of common cold or allergy. In some cases, especially in overweight patients with persistent nasal discharge, it could indicate a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. The risk increases if there is a history of head trauma. CSF leak can allow infections like meningitis to reach the brain, which can be life-threatening. Immediate consultation with a specialist doctor is essential. Diagnosis is often confirmed with a beta-2 transferrin test. If the test is positive, timely treatment is critical to prevent serious complications.
