Why Adult Immunization is a necessity and not a luxury in India ?

· India is a developing country with a high disease burden of co-morbid population and increased incidence and prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

· Health enhancement is largely dependent on prevention, which is the first level of healthcare, with vaccination believed to be one of the most cost-effective primary prevention measures to protect and promote health.

· In-fact, vaccination is one preventive care measure that the WHO recognizes as one of the best health investments money can buy.

· Vaccinations provided or given in childhood, provides early immunity, but their effectiveness can diminish over time, making adult immunization essential.

· Adult immunization is often an overlooked aspect of preventive healthcare. These adult vaccinations help protect individuals from illnesses such as influenza, pneumonia, hepatitis, tetanus, shingles, etc. which can cause severe complications, ultimately leading to hospitalization.

· Immunization is especially important for older adults, individuals with chronic conditions (like diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems), pregnant women, and those working in high-risk environments.

Why Adult immunization is essential at workplace?

At workplace, adult immunization is a critical component of workplace health and safety, ensuring employees remain protected against preventable diseases. Immunization also prevents the spread of contagious diseases, ensuring business continuity and minimizing disruptions.

It was an insightful experience to be part of the Expert Panel discussion on : “Building Stronger OSH Standards in India : The Role of Regulatory Bodies and Industry Compliance” at ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Faridabad during the Workshop on Best Practices in Occupational Safety and Health organised by National Training Academy Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)in collaboration with Director General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI) & Director General Mines Safety( DGMS).

The industry sector is undergoing a transformative shift, and building a Occupational Health workforce that is agile, skilled, and future-ready with AFIH qualification is more critical than ever, the need is for stronger industry-academia collaboration to develop Occupational Health talent for tomorrow.

The future holds immense potential, we remain committed to empowering our workforce with the right skills, fostering innovation, and shaping a sustainable future.

Industries often view OSH as a burden because they are unable to view the long term-benefits of building a strong OSH culture which starts with basic minimum by compliance of laid down OSH Standards.

We need to develope metrics to demonstrate the return on investment (ROI) of OSH initiatives.

We can change the mindset of Industries by repositioning OSH compliance as a strategic advantage, as a business case, rather than an imposed cost.

- Lighting A Single candle of My Own Awareness Celebrations have started across the globe with Diwali in India followed by Christmas and New Year celebrations. From distributing gifts to holding parties, we carry out several initiatives to celebrate this festival season with a renewed feelings of hope, promise and optimism. A single candle or lamp holds infinite beauty and hope. Diwali is a celebration of victory over evil or darkness and the coming of a New Year. But what is the darkness we want to remove? Let us not only celebrate Diwali for a day, but let life be a Diwali experience.�It would be the perfect time for us to include mental wellbeing initiatives in our celebration plans. As we clean our homes, let's clean our minds of all the emotional blockages. Let us check the smallest corners and remove all the little stains of harsh words, bitterness, betrayal and past hurts. As we wear new clothes, let's also get rid of our old, unwanted, disturbing habits of anger, jealousy, worry.... and emerge our new but original qualities of peace, love and joy. Let’s also emerge our new way of thinking, responding to situations and a new way of living. As we settle our old account books and begin new ones, let us settle our old karmic accounts, any unpleasantness in relationships and begin our relationships in a new positive way. If there is anything we are still holding onto, let it go. Forgive and resolve conflicts. It’s time for settlement. As we light the lamps, let us ignite the lamp of spiritual wisdom within. Wisdom fills us with peace, love and joy and radiates to the world. As we burst firecrackers, let us burn and finish the past hurt. ICOH has launched webinar series, covering a wide range of current topics in occupational health.

ICOH members in good standing will have free access to the ICOH webinars as an additional benefit included in their ICOH membership. Non-ICOH members will be charged a small fee for participation.

ICOH first webinar will focus on the theme ‘Connection from occupational practice to research and global evidence.

The aim is to present some important points for practitioners who are not very experienced in research: basics presentation on helping their communication (key elements on abstract), and how to use (and contribute to) reports for some agencies, social media databases, and networks.
