“It’s better to stop the spark than to fight fire”

Preventing cancer is generally far better medically, emotionally, and economically than treating cancer as prevention saves lives, money, and suffering long before a tumour even forms.

Time to Move Beyond Medical Check-Ups: The New Role of Industrial Physicians

For decades, the role of industrial physicians has centred on medical check-ups, compliance, and illness treatment. While these remain essential, they are largely reactive — designed to detect disease, not to build resilience or prevent risks before they arise.

But today’s world of work is far more complex.Workplaces are no longer just sites of production — they are ecosystems of human potential.

It’s time for a strategic shift in mindset: From routine medical examinations to strategic workforce wellbeing.

A strategic wellbeing model integrates health into the very DNA of the organisation — addressing physical, mental, and social wellbeing as core drivers of performance, safety, and innovation.

Modern employees face diverse challenges: stress, fatigue, sedentary lifestyles, and mental health issues. These don’t just impact individuals — they affect productivity, engagement, and business outcomes.

Healthy employees are more adaptable, innovative, and productive.

Human sustainability is business sustainability.

When people thrive, performance follows.

Learning from the COVID-19 pandemic, we embraced the WHO Healthy Workplace Model, which reinforces the importance of holistic wellbeing as a key driver of engagement and retention.

The industrial physician of the future is not just a medical examiner — but a strategic health leader, shaping business performance and continuity.

It’s time to raise the bar of ‘H’ in HSE because workforce wellbeing is the foundation of organisational success.

Life Course Immunization: Pulse of a Resilient Health System

Let us lead by examples during the conference and lay down a strategic roadmap for Life Course Immunization in PSU’s.

Certainly points to ponder :

Why Adult Immunization is a necessity and not a luxury in India ?

· India is a developing country with a high disease burden of co-morbid population and increased incidence and prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

· Health enhancement is largely dependent on prevention, which is the first level of healthcare, with vaccination believed to be one of the most cost-effective primary prevention measures to protect and promote health.

· In-fact, vaccination is one preventive care measure that the WHO recognizes as one of the best health investments money can buy.

· Vaccinations provided or given in childhood, provides early immunity, but their effectiveness can diminish over time, making adult immunization essential.

· Adult immunization is often an overlooked aspect of preventive healthcare. These adult vaccinations help protect individuals from illnesses such as influenza, pneumonia, hepatitis, tetanus, shingles, etc. which can cause severe complications, ultimately leading to hospitalization.

· Immunization is especially important for older adults, individuals with chronic conditions (like diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems), pregnant women, and those working in high-risk environments.

Why Adult immunization is essential at workplace?

At workplace, adult immunization is a critical component of workplace health and safety, ensuring employees remain protected against preventable diseases. Immunization also prevents the spread of contagious diseases, ensuring business continuity and minimizing disruptions.

A well-immunized workforce experiences:
· Fewer sick days,
· Reduced absenteeism, and
· Increased productivity

By implementing vaccination programs, employers can create a healthier work environment, and lower healthcare costs which ultimately motivates employees and ensures business continuity.

Why Adult immunization is important in PSUs?

· Implementing adult immunization in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) is essential, as these organizations form the backbone of India’s economy.

Prioritizing immunization will not only enhance workforce productivity but also contribute to a healthier nation. Moreover, with PSUs incurring significant medical expenditures, a robust vaccination program can effectively reduce healthcare costs while boosting employee morale and overall efficiency.

OSH Compliance is not a burden but a Business Case for us :

It was an insightful experience to be part of the Expert Panel discussion on : “Building Stronger OSH Standards in India : The Role of Regulatory Bodies and Industry Compliance” at ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Faridabad during the Workshop on Best Practices in Occupational Safety and Health organised by National Training Academy Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)in collaboration with Director General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI) & Director General Mines Safety( DGMS).

The industry sector is undergoing a transformative shift, and building a Occupational Health workforce that is agile, skilled, and future-ready with AFIH qualification is more critical than ever, the need is for stronger industry-academia collaboration to develop Occupational Health talent for tomorrow.

The future holds immense potential, we remain committed to empowering our workforce with the right skills, fostering innovation, and shaping a sustainable future.

Industries often view OSH as a burden because they are unable to view the long term-benefits of building a strong OSH culture which starts with basic minimum by compliance of laid down OSH Standards.

We need to develope metrics to demonstrate the return on investment (ROI) of OSH initiatives.

We can change the mindset of Industries by repositioning OSH compliance as a strategic advantage, as a business case, rather than an imposed cost.

By doing so, industries in India can create safer, more productive work environments while driving long-term business growth.
