What is combined first-trimester screening?
It involves a both ultrasound and a blood test called a dual marker test.
The ultrasound involves checking dates, screening for genetic problems especially Downs syndrome, major structural malformations, screening for developing blood pressure, or a weak baby during pregnancy. We check for fluid behind the neck of the baby (nuchal translucency), presence of nasal bone, blood flows through the heart (tricuspid flow), blood flows through tummy (ductus venosus) and fetal heart rate. These scan markers along with the blood test help to get a risk assessment of genetic problems like Trisomy 21, 18, and 13.
