ROLE OF AMAL E QAY (EMESIS THERAPY) IN MAINTAINING LUNG HEALTH.

Lungs are usually affected with either phlegmatic humor or chole (yellow bile) humor which, in chronic conditions can lead to malenchole humor (causing solidification of lung tissues).
As per Unani system of medicine all four humors are always present in human body in equilibrium and are products of food metabolism. So, if metabolism is slow or unnaturally fast, it might cause over production of one of these humors which might lead to imbalance in natural chemistry of humoral makeup.
In that case, comes AMAL E QAY as knight in armor as preventive and as treatment method.

What is AMAL E QAY?

It is one of the ways of istifragh ( to get rid of morbid humor). Since morbid humors get out of body, equilibrium is maintained preventing further diseases.

How is it done?

After some prep, starting from the day before, decoction infused with selected herbs as per the condition is given to patient and within few minutes puking starts and some instructions are given for later that day.

Frequency of AMAL E QAY?

Depending upon the goal (if its preventive or treatment), as per condition of patient, and the imbalance of dominant humor it is decided. However, usually, when its preventive, twice a month is enough.

DYSPNEA / SHORTNESS OF BREATH

Dyspnea Or Shortness of breath is an ACUTE(comes quickly and stays for short period) or CHRONIC condition ( may or may not come quickly but stays for long) where a person has to put effort in order to breath. It might feel as chest tightness or as not getting enough air.

CAUSES:

Anaemia -

Hb is a component of blood which binds with inhaled oxygen to carry it to different organs. When Hv is low, the body will receive less oxygen and heart and lungs have to work more to fulfill the demand and hence, it will cause dyspnea.

Obesity-

Obesity and belly fat will give less space for lung muscles ( intercostal and diaphragm) to expand during breathing and can cause weakening of lung muscles. Also, obesity directly affect heart health and might lead to dyspnea as an aftereffect.

Bad posture -

Slouching while sitting or standing will give less room to breathe., and continuous bad posture will lead to decreased lung capacity causing shortness of breath.

Breathing style-

Shallow breathing gradually hampers with lung capacities and weakens lung muscles causing shortness of breath at slight exertion.

Anxiety-

During stress, hormones ( cortisol and adrenaline) comes into action causing blood pressure to be raised, increased heart rate, and rapid breathing. Acute dyspnea.

Sedentary lifestyle-

DESTRUCTIVE HABITS THAT IMPAIR LUNG HEALTH.

1. SMOKING- smoking has direct impact on irritating lung tissues and causing inflammation. Chemicals in smoke slowly injure lung tissues leading to inelastic non working tissues. That causes impaired exchange of gases from and to the body organs. Even if you are a passive smoker ( inhaling smoke through work place or someone at home), smoking leads to COPD, emphysema and lung cancer.

2. EXTREME COLD AIR - we love being in A/C s, but long hours exposure of this extreme cold and dry air might disrupt natural bio temperament of lung tissues ( warm/ moist). It leads to inflammation of lungs and causes constriction of airways and increase production of mucous and can causes irritation in throat and nose mucosa.

3. COLD BEVERAGES AND FOOD - beverages and foods right from the refrigerator reduces expiratory capacity of lung tissues and causes decrease lung function. Also, these cold food and beverages when taken continuously lead to disturbed equilibrium in humors and leads to many diseases.

4. BREATHING - right breathing techniques help strengthen lungs. Abdominal breathing ( diaphragmatic) is deep breathing technique that infuses maximum oxygen in lungs. While chest breathing ( intercostal) is shallow breathing technique which uses lung diameter but oxygen Infusion is less. Most of us are shallow breathers. 5. POSTURE - wrong posture might lead to shallow breathing by not using right muscles which weakens lung in the long term.

SUMMER and ALLERGIES MANAGEMENT.

Summer is here and so the heat wave is. While we all love cooling A/C air , ice creams, curd, lassi, lemonade , melons , ice chilled latte and whatnot, some of us with allergies and pulmonary issues can get caught up in flaring up of disease. let us understand how to stay cool and keep ourselves healthy throughout.

Summer season : temperament before rain - hot/dry.
temperament after rain - hot/moist.

Why we feel lethargic in summers?

*Season being hot, has a tendency of dissolution of all the body strength including digestive and absorptive strength.
*Vital heat is weak in the season and hot air through lungs causes increase in temperature of heart.
* In result , circulation of blood to the periphery increases making skin flushed.
* Which results in dissolution of innate moisture leading to dehydration and feeling of being tired easily.

before rain -

~ Stay hydrated with electrolyte infused water, coconut water, sugarcane juice, mango juice etc.

FOODS FOR LUNG HEALTH : a brief insight.

Food and health go hand in hand, and lung health is no different. Lungs are elastic structure, they get their physiology from their mizaj/ temperament ( HOT/WET). To sustain that temperament in order to keep them healthy, some foods have priority over others.

1. SAPODILLA/cheeku ( temperament- hot/moist)
Fiber rich fruit have anti oxidant, anti inflammatory properties as it have tannins, flavonoids ,Vit.c which decreases risk of chronic diseases and helps build immunity. It contains potassium, copper, magnesium. Copper helps in production of haemoglobin ( oxygen carrying compound). Sapodilla helps maintaining of elasticity of lung tissues thereby, promoting lung health.

2. JAGGERY/ Gur( temperament- hot/moist)

Jaggery is rich in magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and selenium which apart from providing nutrition, helps build immunity and retains elasticity of lungs. It produces heat in body and keep lungs warm and moist.

3. HONEY ( temperament- hot/moist)

Honey has been used since ages for preservation of medicine and treating all kinds of lung diseases due to it's anti microbial and anti inflammatory properties. Studies have shown to have increased anti oxidant activity in body after using honey due to it's rich content in polyphenols, flavonoids, iron, zinc and potassium.

4. DATES / khajoor ( temperament- hot/ moist)

In studies, dates are found to have certain resistance to bacteria like E. coli, pneumonia. Apart from providing nutrition, helps in keeping temperament and elasticity of lungs in equilibrium. Dates contain Vit. B6, iron, magnesium.

5. FIGS/ anjeer( temperament - hot/moist)

Figs have high amount of Vit. k, polyphenols. These fruits have attenuant, anti inflammatory, laxative properties and is rich in fiber. due to its laxative effect, it helps eliminating phlegm from lung. Studies found low Vit. k can impact lung function poorly.

6. ALMONDS ( temperament- hot/moist)

Almond contains fat, protein, vitamin E, fiber. It helps in increasing lung capacity. Have attenuant, anti oxidant, anti inflammatory functions. Almonds have pulmoprotective action in almost all lung diseases.

5 EASY STEPS TO BUILD HEALTHY SELF.

There are no short cuts to health. Chronic diseases took time to built, they will take time to get out. Also you should be willing to take those key steps to change the condition into your favour.

1. AIR - fresh air is important. Also extreme cold air or extreme hot air might cause harm as per person's temperament. Quality of air is responsible for maintaining vital heat, (innate body heat) and is responsible for equilibrium of humors.

2. FOOD AND WATER- clean water, right amount of water is necessary,also chilled water from fridge or any other carbonated or sugary chilled drink is a poison to body. Foods that are not fresh and home cooked, again are threat to health. Maida/ all purpose flour is needed to be avoided. Right fruits, right veggies as per temperament need to be added to diet. As well as nuts, seeds etc. Oils to cook into need to be cold pressed.
timing of meals, quantity along with quality of food are of utmost importance.

3. EXERCISE AND REPOSE OF BODY AND MIND- sedentary lifestyle need to be said bye and right amount and right form of excercises and right amount of rest is important, not just for body but also brain. Less screen time and much more productive hobbies.

FATTY LIVER and IMPORTANCE OF LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS.

Liver is an organ in the body which is responsible for digestion of food, store energy, provide nutrition, removes toxins, and in maintaining sugar insulin cycle in blood.

When liver is fatty means the build up of fat in your liver,( accumulation of phlegmatic/malencholic humor in excessive amounts or morbid phlegmatic/ malencholic humor present),the functions gets disturbed and it no long able to digest food properly, remove toxins potentially, can create insulin resistance over time, and due to impairment of functions, nutrition will also be impaired.
