Ultrasound plays a vital role throughout the journey of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), serving as a non-invasive, real-time imaging tool that guides both diagnosis and treatment with precision. As a radiologist, I can confidently say that ultrasound is not just a supportive modality — it's the backbone of the IVF process.
Here's how ultrasound supports IVF at every stage:
* Baseline Assessment:
At the beginning of the IVF cycle, a transvaginal ultrasound helps assess ovarian reserve by evaluating antral follicle count and uterine anatomy. This step is essential for tailoring hormonal stimulation protocols.
* Follicular Monitoring:
During ovarian stimulation, ultrasound is used to closely monitor follicular development. Accurate measurement of follicle size helps determine the optimal time for triggering ovulation — a crucial step for retrieving mature eggs.
* Endometrial Evaluation:
Ultrasound assesses endometrial thickness and pattern to ensure the uterine lining is receptive enough for embryo implantation. A well-developed endometrium is associated with higher chances of IVF success.
