What Is Addiction?

‘Addiction’ can mean many things to many people, but in general it refers to repeatedly using a substance (such as drugs) or engaging in an activity (such as gambling) for pleasure, even though doing so causes harm or interferes with everyday life.

This can help if:
you want to know what ‘addiction’ means
you want to know the signs of addiction
you think that you or someone you know might have an addiction.

Types of addiction
Addiction is basically a compulsion to use a certain substance or to behave in a certain way in order to feel good (or sometimes to stop feeling really bad). Addiction falls into two main categories: physical and psychological.

Physical addiction

This is when your body becomes dependent on a particular substance. It also often means that you’ve developed a tolerance for the substance, so you have to take more of it to continue to feel the effects. If you have a physical addiction, you’ll experience strong symptoms of withdrawal when you try to give it up. Examples of physical addiction are drug and alcohol dependence, including ci******es and prescription painkillers.

Psychological addiction

This is when your craving for a substance or a behaviour comes from an emotional or psychological desire, rather than from a physical dependence. Your brain is so powerful that it can produce physical symptoms like those of withdrawal, including cravings, irritability and insomnia. Examples of psychological addictions include gambling, gaming, exercise, internet, shopping, s*x and overeating.

Alcohol Addiction

'Addiction’ means having a dependence on a substance or activity. Unlike someone who simply ‘wants’ something, a person with an addiction will have physical cravings and urges for the substance they’re addicted to.

Being addicted to alcohol, sometimes called being an alcoholic, means that you have a physical dependency on alcohol. There are changes that happen in the brain of someone who drinks a lot of alcohol which makes them have physical withdrawals if they don’t drink. Withdrawal symptoms can include insomnia, nausea, sweating, anxiety and physical discomfort. If you are experiencing dependence, it also means you need to consume more alcohol to achieve the intended effect.

Signs of alcohol addiction
Some of the signs of alcohol dependence include:

worrying about when you’ll be able to have your next drink
sweating, nausea or insomnia when you don’t drink
needing to drink more and more alcohol to get drunk
drinking alcohol, or wanting to, when you wake up in the morning
consuming alcohol regularly on your own, or trying to hide your drinking
fighting with friends and family about your drinking or going out.

Developing Dependence
This activity takes place in an area of the brain known as the "reward center," the same place that regulates and reinforces natural rewards vital to existence, such as food and s*x. That is why the addicted brain pursues alcohol and other drugs as if these substances are needed for mere survival And it's why people with addiction place that pursuit irrationally above almost any other priority.

A variety of social, psychological, genetic and other factors make some people more vulnerable than others to developing addiction. No one chooses to develop the disease. Two people may start out using alcohol or other drugs similarly, with one person progressing to addiction while the other person does not.

Individuals who develop addiction are no longer able use alcohol and drugs like other people do. Their brain chemistry has changed in a way that can be brought back into balance through rehab, but that balance will always remain vulnerable to resumed use.

Addiction doesn't happen overnight. It's a gradual process. Sometimes family members don't recognize the small changes that occur daily, weekly or monthly—or how family members adapt to these changes. Here are seven steps you can take to see through the chaos of addiction and find help for your family.

Addiction a Brain Disease
Research has shown that addiction is not a matter of individual strength, moral character or willpower. Instead, it's a matter of how the brain becomes wired.

Long-term use of alcohol and other drugs actually changes the brain. Substance use increases the release of a powerful chemical called dopamine. Over time, if dopamine is routinely in abundance, the brain attempts to balance things out by producing less dopamine. At that point, the brain relies on substances to trigger the release of dopamine. And that is when individuals start to use alcohol and other drugs just to feel normal.

Addiction a Disease of Mind, Body, and Spirit

Addiction is a primary disease, which means it is not the result of some other problem. For example, addiction is not caused by a bad marriage or other difficulty in life. We also know addiction is:

Progressive–if unaddressed, it will get worse
Chronic–there is no cure, but it can be managed
Potentially fatal

Many of the negative, stigmatizing behavioral symptoms associated with the disease of addiction tend to diminish and abate when appropriately addressed and managed in recovery.

At the individual and family levels, alcohol and drug addiction is traditionally considered a private matter, something only whispered about. Even when the symptoms of the disease are obvious to all around, individuals and families too often avoid seeking help for fear of even acknowledging the problem. This is one reason only one in 100 Indians with a substance use disorder receives professional care for addiction.

At the community and societal levels, the same undercurrent of addiction stigma keeps drug and alcohol addiction under-diagnosed, under-treated, under-funded and misunderstood by many, especially as compared to other chronic health conditions such as heart disease, asthma and diabetes.
