വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ഒരു സ്വതന്തര ചികിത്സാ ശാഖയാണ് ഫിസിയോതെറാപ്പി.

BC 460തിൽ ഹിപ്പോക്രാറ്റസും, ഗലീനിയസും ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പിയുടെ ചില ചികിത്സാ രീതികൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നതായ് ചരിത്ര രേഖകളിൽ പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.എന്നാൽ 1813 ൽ സ്വീഡനിലെ റോയൽ സെൻട്രൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിട്ട്യൂറ്റ് ഓഫ് ജീംനാസ്റ്റിക്സിലെ ഒരു സ്വീഡിഷ് ജിംനാസ്റ്റിക്ക് പ്രോഫസർ പെർ
ഹെൻറിക്ക് ലീൻ (PER HENRIK LING) ആണ് ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പിക്ക് ഒരു ആമുഖം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയത്.1894 ൽ ബ്രിട്ടനിൽ ഫിസിയോതെറാപ്പി ചാർട്ടേർഡ് സൊസൈറ്റി രൂപവൽക്കരിച്ചു.

പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ കുറച്ചു കൂടി വിപുലമായ തലത്തിൽ ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പി
വളർന്ന് വന്നത് ബ്രിട്ടനിലാണ്. 1913 ൽ ന്യൂസിലാൻഡിലെ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ്
ഒട്ടാഗോയിൽ ആദ്യമായ് സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പി രൂപവൽകരിച്ചു. 1918 ൽ
അമേരിക്കയിലെ വാഷിങ്ടൺ DC യിലെ വാൾട്ടർ റീഡ് ആർമി ഹോസ്പ്പിറ്റലിലും സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പി രൂപീകരിച്ചു.1921 ലാണ് ലോകത്ത് ആദ്യമായ്ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പിയുടെ ഒരു റിസർച്ച് നടത്തിയത്.. ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പിയിലൂടെ
ചലനം സാധ്യമാക്കുന്നു എന്ന വിഷയത്തെ കുറിച്ചായിരുന്നു ആ റിസർച്ച്.

1921ൽ മേരി മാക്മില്ലൻ (MARY MCMILLAN)എന്ന അമേരിക്കൻ വനിതാ ഫിസിയോതെറാപ്പിസ്റ്റിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ അമേരിക്കൻ വ്യുമൻ ഫിസിക്കൽ
തെറാപ്പിസ്റ്റ് അസോസിയേഷൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പിസ്റ്റുകൾക്കായ് ഒരു പ്രഫഷണൽ സംഘടന രൂപീകരിച്ചു. ഇന്ന് അത് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് അമേരിക്കൻ ഫിസിക്കൽ തെറാപ്പിസ്റ്റ് അസോസിയേഷൻ (AMERICAN PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSOCIATION) APTA എന്ന പേരിലാണ്.
1952ൽ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ബോംബെയിലെ കിംങ് എഡ് വേർഡ് മെമ്മോറിയിൽ ഹോസ്പ്പിറ്റലിൽ
(K.E.M Hospital, Mumbai) ആണ് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ആദ്യമായ് ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പി ചികിത്സ തുടങ്ങിയത്. 1977ൽ ആണ് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ആദ്യമായ് ഫിസിയോതെറാപ്പിയുടെ
ഗ്രാജുവേഷൻ കോഴ്സുകൾ തുടങ്ങിയത്.
പിന്നീട് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പി ചികിൽസയുടെ വളർച്ച വളരെ
വേഗത്തിലായിരുന്നു. ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ ജനനം മുതൽ മരണം വരെയുള്ള വിവിധ
കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ആവശ്യം വരുന്ന മറ്റ് ചികിൽസാ ശാഖകളെ പോലെ തന്നെ
ഒഴിച്ചുകൂടാൻ പറ്റാത്ത ഒന്നായി ഇന്ന് ഫിസിയോ തെറാപ്പി ചികിൽസയും മാറി
കഴിഞ്ഞു.
