Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) is a serious but treatable condition that can occur in identical twins who share a single placenta. 💙💗 In these monochorionic pregnancies, abnormal blood vessel connections within the shared placenta can cause an uneven flow of blood between the babies. One twin (the donor) gives away too much blood and may have very low amniotic fluid, while the other twin (the recipient) receives too much blood and develops excess fluid.
TTTS affects around 15% of monochorionic twin pregnancies and is usually diagnosed through ultrasound by measuring amniotic fluid levels. Doctors also use the Quintero staging system, which includes five stages to assess severity and guide treatment decisions. Early detection is crucial, because with timely monitoring and advanced care—such as fetoscopic laser surgery to correct the abnormal blood vessel connections—outcomes for both babies can improve significantly.
Raising awareness about TTTS helps parents understand the importance of regular prenatal checkups, specialized care for twin pregnancies, and early intervention. Knowledge, monitoring, and modern medicine together can truly save lives and offer hope to families expecting twins. 🤍
