How much weight gain is normal in pregnancy? 🤔🤰🏻
This depends on your pre pregnancy weight and BMI.
✅BMI is your body mass index
To calculate BMI measure your weight in kg and height in metres.
✅Then use this formula to calculate BMI= weight ( kg) / height ( square metres) .
🏵️Underweight if BMI< 18.5
🏵️Normal weight if BMI 18.5 to 24.9
🏵️Overweight if BMI> 25
🏵️Obese if BMI> 30

✅For normal BMI women, a weight gain of 12 to 16 kg is enough to deliver a healthy 3 kg baby.
✅For underweight women, a weight gain of 13 to 18 kg is expected.
✅For overweight women, a weight gain of 7 to 11 kg is enough.
✅For obese women, a weight gain of 5 to 7 kg is enough.
🤰🏻🤰🏻Excess weight gain can lead to multiple problems like
🤰🏻Hypertension
🤰🏻Gestational diabetes
🤰🏻Odema
🤰🏻Difficult delivery
🤰🏻Delayed recovery from delivery

Breastfeeding is not easy for everyone.
Some mothers struggle to breastfeed their child. They start living in guilt of being a bad mother but that's not true. All mothers are great and do their best for their babies.
Although breastmilk is the best for all babies , if you cannot give breastmilk to your child then the available options are either formula milk or substitute milk ( cow's milk/ goat milk / buffalo milk).
Cow's milk is rich in sodium, protein and fats. Human milk contains 15 to 20 mg of sodium per 100 ml while cow's milk contains 40 to 50 mg sodium per 100 ml.
The higher sodium content in cow's milk can potentially put a strain on an infant's immature kidneys, as it increases the renal solute load (the amount of dissolved substances that need to be excreted). This is why healthcare professionals generally recommend against feeding cow's milk to infants under one year of age, favoring breast milk or appropriately formulated infant formula.

How to increase breastmilk? Part 3 ( last )

How to increase your breast milk? 🤱🏻

Increase breast stimulation - Start breastfeeding within one hour of birth because baby's sucking reflex is strongest at this time. Sucking sends stimulus to the pituitary gland in the brain- it releases Prolactin and Oxytocin hormones. Prolactin increases milk production and oxytocin acts on the breast alveoli to let the milk come out of the ni**le. This is called the milk let down reflex or oxytocin reflex. The more the baby sucks at the ni**le , the more oxytocin will be produced and more milk will be released.
More demand= more supply.

Practice rooming in and proper latching - mother and baby should stay together on the bed 24 x 7 , this increases mother and baby bond. Ensure proper latching so that the ni**le and ar**la are inside the baby's mouth. This ensures effective sucking and less pain to the mother.

Self confidence and positivity - Every mother has the power to produce enough milk for her baby. A mother who is confident will produce better milk and will be able to feed her baby for a longer time. Having a good support system at home will help her in her journey. A supportive husband and family are very important for successful breastfeeding.

Proper hydration- drinking enough water and liquids will help in maintaining enough milk supply. Drinking less water will result in dehydration and exhaustion, thereby reducing milk supply.

Proper nutrition - Eating balanced diet helps in ensuring good milk formation.Carbs, protein and healthy fats are important for successful breastfeeding. A poorly fed mother cannnot make good milk .

Lots of people think that giving ghutti in the form of honey is good for the baby. On the contrary, you could be doing a lot of harm to your child. It not only suppresses hunger and reduces drive for breastfeeding, it can cause serious infection like infant botulism.
Honey can contain spores of clostridium botulinum which can contaminate the stomach of babies and cause botulinum infection. It's a serious infection causing the baby to feel floppy, sleepy and less hungry.
Please give only mother's milk for the first 6 months it's safe, pure and full of nutrients.

Did you give liquid gold to your child?
No it's not the physical gold , but the colostrum, the first breast milk that comes for 2 to 3 days after delivery.
Why do we call the colostrum - liquid gold?
Not just because it's yellow in colour
It's packed with good nutrition for your baby; high in protein, with less fats and sugars for easy digestion
It's nature's first vaccine - protecting baby from infections and illnesses; it contains antibodies , lactoferrin, white blood cells that provide immunity to the baby
It provides healthy bacteria to the baby's gut , so baby has a good gut microbiome, because good gut is essential for healthy growth throughout life.
It acts as a laxative - cleans baby's tummy and prevents constipation.

Now you know why we call colostrum as liquid gold.
Always feed your baby within one hour of birth
Keep feeding on demand at frequent intervals of 2 to 3 hours.
