Small things matter in life...

This is a blood vessel in human body. The red dots is the blood flowing through, along with those blue dots which are the defensive cells of the body. They fight out the enemies causing infections. The wonders of the human biology.

Annoyingly Aggressive but Graciously Benign...Glandular Odontogenic Cyst...

Region - Anterior maxilla
Patient had 2 previous recurrences post enucleation of the cystic lining. Presently, the lesion had eroded the maxillary sinus floor. This time the enucleated lining was sent for histopathology & lo & behold, we get to see an odontogenic cyst showing glandular metaplasia in the lining, along with features that suggest the lesion to be 'GOC', a completely benign entity but annoyingly aggressive. Good curettage with peripheral ostectomy/cauterization take care of the recurrence.

PS - Histopathological examination of every cystic lining, however innocuous it might look, should be mandatory.

STAFNE BONE CYST - WHEN SALIVARY GLANDS DECIDE TO CHANGE ADDRESS...

A developmental, asymptomatic lesion showing a typical 'near inferior cortex, below IAN canal' radiolucency. Researchers have put the blame on developing salivary glands when they change location (ectopic) or when there are post developmental remnants. the blame, rightly so, is substantiated by the histopathology below.

Early diagnosis still rules the roost...
A case of chronic tongue ulcer due to sharp tooth, Vital Staining revealed a possible 'uncontrolled activity' in the ulcer.
Patient was immediately taken up for incisional biopsy and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
The mobility of tongue was still unrestricted and no palpable lymph nodes were appreciated. So, hopefully an early savior for the patient.
Take home points - Early & prompt diagnosis of oral ulcers and biopsy wherever needed.

Pathologists are physicians & human beings. They have as great a capacity for error and susceptibility to subjective distractions as other practitioners of the art of medicine. Because of certain nineteenth century dogmas and because the teaching of pathology used to be relegated primarily to the long-forgotten preclinical phase, pathologists traditionally have been regarded to be more scientific than many of their colleagues. A mystic perversion of this assumption prevails among those clinicians who believe that the pathologist, given only a piece of a patient’s tissue, has all of the other ingredients necessary to produce a statement of absolute truth at the end of his report. More dangerous to mankind is a pathologist with the same concept.
