The *Gokarma Oncology Association*, in collaboration with *Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai*, supported by *Manipal Goa Hospital* organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) workshop on “Cancer Genetics & Counselling “ at the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula, on Monday.
The half-day academic programme brought together leading oncologists, genetic specialists, and healthcare professionals to deliberate on the growing role of genetic testing and counselling in modern cancer care and precision oncology.
Experts highlighted that India reports approximately *14 lakh new cancer cases annually*, of which nearly *3% are hereditary*, linked to germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes such as _BRCA1, BRCA2, MLH1, MSH2, TP53,_ and _APC_. The workshop stressed the urgent need for structured genetic counselling services, early risk assessment, and preventive oncology strategies.
The workshop was inaugurated by *Dr. Shekhar Salkar*, Senior Oncosurgeon, Manipal Hospital, Goa, and President, Gokarma Oncology Association, and *Dr. Rajiv Sarin*, Professor & In-Charge, Cancer Genetics Unit, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, in the presence of *Dr. Aparna Dhar*, Director, Hereditary, Precision Oncology & Genetic Counselling, MAX Hospital, Delhi; *Dr. Sujoy Fernandes*, Consultant Radiation Oncologist, Manipal Hospital, Goa; *Dr. Jacob George*, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Manipal Hospital, Goa; *Dr. Mahadeva Swamy B C*, Consultant, Hemato-Oncology and BMT, Manipal Hospital, Goa; *Dr. Brizellda DCunha*, Consultant Pathologist; *Dr. Charudutt Sambhaji*, Consultant Radiologist; *Dr. Shredharan M*, Consultant Surgical Oncologist; and *Dr. Pankaj Mhatre*, Consultant, Nuclear Medicine, Manipal Hospital, Goa.

*Dr. Rajiv Sarin*, Professor & In-Charge, Cancer Genetics Unit, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai spoke on
“Hereditary Breast Ovarian Cancer Syndrome & Founder BRCA1/2 Mutations in Konkan; Hereditary Colorectal, Endometrial & Other Lynch Syndrome Associated Cancers”
He said “We’ve identified founder mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, and MLH1 in several Indian populations including Goa. Recognising these patterns allows us to bring targeted screening and prevention to the community level.”
