Dean Student Welfare Office launched Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at Punjabi University Patiala on 20.11.2024, which is an initiative of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The inaugural session consisted of the maiden sensitisation and awareness generation program in the hostels on drug de-addiction. The NMBA Committee members, which included Prof Monica Chawla as the Nodal Officer, Dr Onkar Singh and Mrs Harpreet Kaur as wardens and Dr Ruby Gupta as Counsellor, organised the session. The team focussed on addressing participation of stakeholders, which may be directly or indirectly affected by substance abuse. It primarily aimed to educate students on Prevention Strategies, emphasise mental health support, Self-regulation, and Personal Capacity Building.
Additional Dean Student Welfare, Dr Naina Sharma and Provost, Dr Inderjeet Chahal also shared their views on the ill effects of drugs with the students. Prof. Mamta Sharma was specially invited to share her experiences with the students on the consequences of substance addiction from physical as well as psychological point of view. Officials from Punjab Red Cross De-addiction and District Rehabilitation Centre shared their first-hand experiences with the students with the ground realities of substance addiction.
The program was conducted by Dr Ruby Gupta and vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Onkar Singh.

Mental health is fundamental to our overall well-being, profoundly influencing how we think, act, and interact in our daily lives.The Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology, Punjabi University, Patiala organised an invited lecture on 'Mental Health and Well Being'. Dr Ruby Gupta from Student Counselling Centre of Dean Student Welfare Office delivered the lecture, which covered various nuances and parameters of Mental Health and their importance in holistic well being. Head of the department, Dr Ranjeeta stressed upon the importance of mental health as an integral aspect of overall health and the relevance of the interaction for the students. The interactive session aimed to add value to the lives of the students.

As per the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC), Student Counselling Centre was set-up at Punjabi University, Patiala in the premises of Dean, Students’ Welfare Office in January, 2019.

It strives to establish Mental Health as a co-existent with Physical, Emotional, Social, Academic & Spiritual Health and thus a predictor of holistic well-being.

The Student Counselling Centre focuses on addressing the challenges and dilemmas faced by the students ranging from Anxiety, Stress, Homesickness, Interpersonal Conflicts, Depressive Thoughts and Academic Concerns affecting mental health and day-to-day life.

And it has covered a very productive and efficient journey in these years while laying a road map for Mental Health concerns in the University and around. Student Counselling Centre has conducted more than 40 events on Mental Health Awareness and the efforts to destigmatize it in the last six years including the covid times. Even during covid, an efficient helpline and various webinars were run to help the students as much as possible!
