Stay Healthy This Winter: Important Advice from AIIMS Patna.

Prof. (Dr.) Jyoti Prakash, Head of the Department of General Medicine, AIIMS Patna, explains that during the winter season viral infections increase significantly, leading to a rise in common problems such as , cough, sore throat, and fever. Viruses like , flu, and adenovirus become more active in cold weather, making people more susceptible to respiratory infections. To reduce the risk, he advises wearing face masks in crowded places, avoiding direct exposure to cold air, and staying away from cold food and beverages. Instead, drinking warm water regularly, consuming herbal tea prepared with ginger and tulsi, and taking milk mixed with turmeric for one to two months can help improve immunity and prevent respiratory illnesses.

He further highlights that elderly individuals, especially those suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, need extra care during winter. During this season, the risk of serious complications such as heart attack and brain stroke increases, making it extremely important for them to continue their prescribed medicines without missing any dose and remain under regular medical supervision.

Although morning walks are generally beneficial for health, during winter it is safer to go for walks after 8 a.m. Cold temperatures can cause narrowing of blood vessels, leading to increased blood pressure and a higher risk of paralysis or stroke. Therefore, light exercises at home are a safer alternative during early morning hours in the winter season.

We sincerely thank Prof. (Dr.) Jyoti Prakash for sharing this valuable awareness message for the benefit of the common public.
AIIMS Patna remains committed and dedicated through its departments, doctors, healthcare teams, and continuous efforts in serving the health needs of society.
