*Historic case of 5 year old baby having carrom coins behind nose for 3.5 years*
In a groundbreaking medical achievement for Zama Memorial ENT& multi-speciality hospital , a 5 year old baby boy underwent surgical intervention for foreign body in nasopharynx, a rare condition where child speech was altered. He could not take solid food..his weight was just 13 kg. His growth was hampered. A comprehensive examination and CT scan of the nose & paranasal sinuses led to the diagnosis.
The baby had history of carrom coin ingestion in mouth at the age of 1½ years having treated for it in Banaras and Sasaram and he was kept in ICU for 15days and the parents were assured that there baby is normal .
They visited to our OPD for speech difficulty and he could not eat solid foods..On examination there was slough in the nasopharynx....and child had nasal intonation. Further investigation revealed that there is something in nasopharynx which reaches upto epiglottis.
The delicate procedure was performed at Zama Memorial ENT Multi-Speciality Hospital, Phulwarisharif, Patna, was led by Dr. Md Sarfaraz and Dr. Arshana Tabassum, both renowned ENT surgeons, and was conducted under general anesthesia. This complex procedure highlighted the challenges associated with 5 year old baby having such long history of foreign body, including precise dosing of anesthetics and close monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
The multidisciplinary team exemplified exceptional coordination and expertise. The anesthesia team, led by Dr. Rohit , included Anesthesia Technician Vikku kumar. The operation theater team was composed of shahnawaz Hussain, Sonu kumar, Firdous Hassan.
Remarkably, the baby was extubated within half hour and discharged after 84 hours, with stable vitals and restored nasal breathing. This landmark procedure not only marks a significant advancement in pediatric care for the region but also stands as a testament to the successful integration of specialized medical expertise in handling intricate surgeries.
