🌞 Chhath Puja & Kidney Patients – Important Fasting Precautions! 🌊🙏
Chhath is a time of deep faith and devotion — offering arghya to the rising and setting sun, thanking nature for life and health. But for those living with kidney disease, fasting without precautions can sometimes do more harm than good.
Here are a few simple tips to keep your Chhath safe and meaningful 🌼
🌿 1️⃣ Know Your Health First
If you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), are on dialysis, or have diabetes with kidney problems, talk to your doctor before fasting.
👉 You may be advised a modified or symbolic fast instead of complete fasting.
Faith should never come at the cost of your health.
💧 2️⃣ Handle Water Wisely
Fasting and standing in the sun can cause dehydration — dangerous for kidneys.
CKD patients (not on dialysis): Sip small amounts of water (30–50 ml/hour) - it may varry - consult your doctor.
Dialysis patients: Don’t exceed your fluid limit (about 500–700 ml + previous day’s urine).
Avoid over-drinking after arghya; sudden fluid load can cause breathlessness and swelling.
🍎 3️⃣ Choose Safe Fruits & Foods
Traditional fasting foods are not always kidney-friendly!
🚫 Avoid: banana, coconut water, orange, dry fruits, and potato-based snacks (high in potassium).
✅ Prefer: apple, pear, papaya, guava, or boiled vegetables.
❤️ 4️⃣ If You’re Diabetic
Never skip insulin or diabetes tablets without your doctor’s advice.
You can do a light or partial fast (small meals or fruits at intervals).
Check your blood sugar at least twice during fasting.
Low sugar can be more dangerous than breaking the fast!
💊 5️⃣ Don’t Miss Medicines
Take essential medicines (like BP pills or phosphate binders) with small sips of water.
Avoid painkillers like Brufen, Combiflam, Diclofenac — they can harm your kidneys further.
⚠️ 6️⃣ Break the Fast if You Feel…
Dizziness, extreme weakness
Breathlessness or chest heaviness
Swelling of feet or face
No or very little urine
🙏 These are signs your body is not coping. Health first, ritual later.
🌅 7️⃣ After Usha Arghya
When you break your fast — do it gently.
Start with small sips of water.
Avoid oily prasad or heavy food right away — go slow with boiled rice, dal, khichdi, fruits.
🌼 8️⃣ Remember
For patients with advanced CKD, heart disease, or on dialysis, even symbolic fasting is spiritually acceptable and physically safer.
Your devotion lies in your intention — not in the hours of hunger.
🙏 May the Sun God bless you with health, happiness, and healing.
Take care of your kidneys, and let Chhath be a festival of life and gratitude 🌞💧
