The latest review published by Dr. Md Manzar Alam, Research Officer (Unani) and colleagues from the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine, Patna (under the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India) in the journal Advances in Integrative Medicine explores the integration of nanotechnology within the traditional Unani system of medicine. This comprehensive study highlights how ancient Unani scholars, through practices like Kushta (calx) and Sayyāl (dissolved metals), demonstrated knowledge of nanoparticles and their therapeutic potential centuries before modern nanotechnology emerged. The review discusses historical and modern nanoparticle synthesis methods, standardization procedures, and safety considerations, showcasing the alignment between traditional Unani pharmaceutical processes and contemporary nanotechnological principles. It also emphasizes the need for further research, toxicological studies, and clinical trials to fully harness the therapeutic benefits of nanotechnology in Unani medicine, fostering innovation while preserving ancient wisdom. This work bridges classical knowledge and modern science, offering promising avenues for novel, biocompatible, and eco-friendly therapeutic agents inspired by Unani practices.
