As temperatures rise, the physiological effects of heat become clinically relevant; not only for patients, but for healthcare professionals as well. Dehydration can impair concentration, reduce alertness and contribute to fatigue during long ward postings.

Simple preventive measures are often overlooked: maintaining steady hydration before rounds begin, incorporating electrolyte solutions when appropriate, wearing breathable layers under scrubs and recognising early signs of heat exhaustion such as dizziness or excessive fatigue.

Clinical excellence includes personal preparedness. A well-hydrated, attentive clinician is better positioned to deliver safe and effective care.
