GUT MICROME AND ITS EFFECT ON HUMAN HEALTH-
Dr.Sumathi Raja,M.D(O&G),DRM(Germany),
Obstetrician & infertility consultant,
Pollachi.
We have trillions of bacteria in our gut , some are good and some are bad in influencing our health .can you believe we have a big zoo of bacteria in our intestines ,starting from our skin , mouth , intestines etc ?
We are destined to have many diseases, depends upon the good and bad bacteria that rule us .
Gut bacteria ,when we are born are acquired from our mothers va**nal canal by the normal commensals of va**na called Lactobaciilus , where as in Caesarian section staphylococci and streptococci become the gut microbes in Cesarian born children .
1.Who acquire more gut bacteria and how ?
A.Children or adult playing in the soil , mud or out doors get in touch with more bacteria and more varieties of them .
B.People doing gardening while mixing the soil gain more bacteria.
C . People who own pets, from dogs or cats they acquire more bacteria.
2. Eat more veggies
3. Eat more fermented foods like fermented gooseberry , mango , lemon pickle , curd, kefir etc . The list is big , this being a low carb group , I’m not adding the rest .
3.What is the food for good bacteria to grow ?
Fibre, fibre, fibre . The good bacteria thrive on fibre like vegetables mainly uncooked salads .To a lesser level on cooked vegetables .
Also bacteria loves fresh onions , garlic and cruciferous vegetables .
4.How does bad bacteria multiply ?
When we eat sugary stuff and junk foods , processed food , bad bacteria multiply .
5.What are the diseases connected to our bad bacteria in the gut ?
You will be suprised to know that there are an array of diseases connected to gut bacteria.
A.Obesity is connected to the gut bacteria we have in our gut .
What bacteria help us to become thin ?
Study shows Lactobcillus gasseri - this strain is attributed to keep our BMI in place and keep our waist line good .
2.Prevotella - this bacterial strain grows on plants based food what we eat ( shortly we can say this is veg bacteria )
3.Bacteroides - these bacteria grow on animal food subrates we eat and are associated with loosing weight . ( so these can be called as non veg bacteria )
These three above strains of bacteria and many others are know to save us from obesity .
6.Why should you know about the strains which are associated with weight loss ?
These are the bacterial names , we can buy probiotics containing these bacteria to help us these good bacteria in gut .
7 . How do we kill the bacteria in our gut ?
By taking antibiotics unnescesarily . Antibiotics not only kill bad bacteria which causes the diseases, but also it kills the good bacteria in the gut .
Frequently hand washing also kills many bacteria.
8 .What are the other diseases linked to our gut bacteria other than obesity ?
1. Childhood asthma
2. Autism
3. depression
4. psoriasis
5. other autoimmune diseases .
6. mood swings
7. food cravings etc
8 .How does bad bacteria affect our health ?
The bacterias in our instertines depending on their number and strain excretes substances and their excreta goes deep in to our system , they are always connected to our brain too , for example , the bacteria on our intestines signals the brain too eat the burger and not the hunger .
Also the bacteria excretes substances and these substances signals the body to crave for certain foods.
These bacteria can even signal the body harmones either to do the good thing or bad thing , depending on what harmones they make our body secrete .
In short we are totally controlled by bacteria in our intestines . The diseases we suffer are also because of these bacteria.
The number of bacteria are more than the number of cells in the body .
9 . What is meant by prebiotics and probiotics ?
The food for the bacteria like vegetables , fibres in any form , onion , garlic are all good prebiotics .
10.What are probiotics ?
The bacteria containing food are called probiotics . The food which contains the bacteria like curd , fermented vegetables like pickles serves as good source of bacteria .
Cheese , paneer ,
Kimchi , kambucha , savourkot , miso . Among them non sweetened fermented fibre foods are better than the sweetened fibre vegetables .
Idli , dosa are other fermented foods which are not consumed in low carb diet .
11.Can gut bacteria affect menstrual harmones in female and male harmones in male ?
Certain bacteria can affect the metabolism of testosterone, estrogen , progesterone, and in the bile the bacteria is capable of producing its own new harmone and much of it is beyond the scope of the article .This way females can have harmonal issues , and infertility because of the deranged harmones . Men also can have less of testosterone .
11. What are the probiotics which contains the weight loosing bacteria?
Search for the probiotics online by yourself and buy the probiotics which contains the above strains for yourselves .
12. What are effects of fasting in gut microbiome ?
When there is no food in the gut , it allows the less dominant bacteria to grow . Bacterial diversity is more useful .
Also when there is no food , gall bladder won’t contract , so bile won’t come in contact with bacteria, so antimicrobial activity of bile is less , so it is more favourable for gut bacteria to grow when you fast . Intermittent fasting help your gut bacteria to grow better .
13.How do I know what bacteria are there in my instestines ?
GI mapping or gut microbiome testing will tell you the bad and good bacteria in your intestines .
This test is costly test and time consuming test and it costs Rs.35 k to Rs.45 k per test and it takes 2 weeks to do the test .
It is not a nescessary test , unless and otherwise your issues are not able to be treated .
Conclusion -
GROW MORE PLANTS
GROW MORE PETS - Dogs , cats or birds .
Stay connected to Mother Earth .
Walk on bare foot as possible in the mud or sand
EAT MORE FIBRE , VEGGIES, FERMENTED FOODS .
EAT PREBIOTICS AND PROBIOTICS IF NEEDED .
