I promise it's never my intention to be rude when I say "What?"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👋🏼Hi! I'm Michelle - the Pediatric Audiologist behind .hu.hears. I grew up utilizing hearing aids and am now a bilateral cochlear implant recipient. I love sharing bits and piece of my hearing loss journey in hopes of helping others understand, communicate and know that they aren't alone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With hearing loss - whether I have amazing hearing devices or not, it takes more energy for my brain to listen and process sounds and speech around me. If I'm focused on an activity or task, I might miss the first few words of what you said because I need to transition my focus/energy to you. That's why getting my attention first before you speak really helps! Plus it saves your energy from having to repeat what you said.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some reasons behind my "What?" Can you relate? Does this help you understand where your child/family member a little bit better?

Communication is key 🔑

No one does it perfectly and it’s always a work in progress right? Even the most communicative of relationships! Someone recently asked if my husband was hearing - yes he is, and being a hearing/DHH couple has brought about both challenges and opportunities that we get to work through 🙏🏽💕

Here are a few strategies we’ve come up with that have helped us work together over the years. For me my most difficult challenge is not taking offense or being sensitive to tones of voice or facial cues - what’s yours?

21/10/2021

Sometimes I can only handle so much auditory input! It can get distracting, give me listening fatigue and take me away from whatever task or activity I’m trying to do. I noticed this first with music in the car years ago. You want to have a conversation with me? Then inners the music turned down - it doesn’t actually provide me a pleasant experience, it makes it harder for me to communicate - so one or the other please!

👋🏼Hi! I'm Michelle - the Pediatric Audiologist behind .hu.hears. I grew up utilizing hearing aids and am now a bilateral cochlear implant recipient. I’m here to share both personal and professional experiences being Deaf/Hard of Hearing 🦻🏼
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With GPS, I’m already using my eyes to look everywhere while driving and this includes the map/guidance - I don’t need an extra voice to focus on/listen to to tell me what to do or where to go.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What are some situations where you turn down the volume or seek silence? For friends and parents - please be mindful 💕🙏🏽

Yesterday I shared what stimming is and that it has a purpose- regulation. Stimming can look so many different ways that I could never make a full list of all of them, but here are some common stims.

Check out my stories for some real life examples- and remember, we are NOT stopping kids from Stimming. Even if we think it looks weird or think, “but what will other people think when they see this?” Instead, educate! “This is what he does to be able to focus”, “this is how they show they are excited”, “this helps her to regulate her emotions” - there’s NO shame in Stimming, but when we act like it’s bad, kids feel that - and then they feel bad for doing things that make them feel good. And we would NEVER want that for anyone!

Stuttering is INTERNATIONAL! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As we know, stuttering exists on every continent, in every culture, in every language on our planet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are honored to have Dieudonne Nsabimana share his story and passion for helping African children who stutter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dieudonne knows that many educators (and others) do not understand the truths about stuttering, and that the experience of African children who stutter can be challenging in their own schools. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, he is DOING something about it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
