Hydrocephalus, which literally means “water on the brain,” is a buildup of fluid inside the skull. This accumulation puts pressure on the brain, causing signs such as an enlarged, dome-shaped head. this condition that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull and causes the brain to swell. Brain damage can occur as a result of the fluid buildup. This can lead to developmental, physical, and intellectual impairments. It requires treatment to prevent serious complications.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows through the brain and spinal cord in normal conditions. Under certain conditions, the amount of CSF in your brain increases. The amount of CSF can increase when:
* a blockage develops that prevents CSF from flowing normally
* there is a decrease in the ability of blood vessels to absorb it
* the brain produces an excess amount of it
Too much of this fluid puts the brain under too much pressure. This pressure can cause brain swelling, which can damage brain tissue.
Cerebrospinal fluid is produced by tissues lining the ventricles of the brain. It flows through the ventricles by way of interconnecting channels. The fluid eventually flows into spaces around the brain and spinal column. It's absorbed primarily by blood vessels in tissues near the base of the brain.
Cerebrospinal fluid plays an important role in brain function by:
* Keeping the brain buoyant, allowing the relatively heavy brain to float within the skull
* Cushioning the brain to prevent injury
* Removing waste products of the brain's metabolism
* Flowing back and forth between the brain cavity and spinal column to maintain a constant pressure within the brain — compensating for changes in blood pressure in the brain
In many cases, the exact event leading to hydrocephalus is unknown. However, a number of developmental or medical problems can contribute to or trigger hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus present at birth (congenital) or shortly after birth may occur because of infection in the uterus during a pregnancy, such as rubella or syphilis.
Patient Spitz female was presented early morning yesterday with Dystocia, with slight portion of pup protruding outside v***a.
Manual inspection revealed pup was with Hydrocephalus dystocia, and relieved easily with hands.
