On the occasion of 'World Plastic Surgery Day' I would like to extend warm wishes to everyone.
Keloids have indeed plagued plastic surgeons all around the world because of their stubborness to respond to any treatment.
Ear keloids are firm, rubbery, fibrous nodules that form on the ear after minor trauma, most commonly after ear piercing. They can occur in earlobes as well as in the skin and cartilage higher on the ear.
Keloids have a distinct appearance that sets it apart from normal tissue, made up of dense fibrous tissue that contains collagen fibres arranged in an irregular pattern.
The ear is a common place to get a keloid. If you or blood relatives have had a keloid, you may develop a keloid after piercing any part of your ear. The best way to prevent a keloid is to skip getting a piercing on any part of your ears.
Keloids result from abnormal wound healing in response to skin trauma or inflammation.
Most keloids continue to grow for weeks or months
Laser treatment, corticosteroid injection, liquid nitrogen, silicone sheets, and radiation therapy are all options that can be used to reduce the size of existing keloids. Pressure therapy is another option that can help flatten out the scar tissue and make it less visible.
Silicone gels are perhaps the most well-researched keloid removal cream. Silicone gels work by forming a protective layer over the keloid, hydrating the skin and reducing collagen production. It is effective in reducing scar height and improving overall scar appearance
The most common non-surgical therapy is intralesional corticosteroid injections (injected into keloid scar) to help shrink it, relieve symptoms, and make it softer. Injections are performed every four to six weeks until the keloid improves.
However, the quickest way to get rid of large, unaesthetic and painful keloids is to excise them surgically followed by maintenance therapies like silicon gels, silicon sheets, intralesional steroid injections, cryotherapy, radiation therapy and pressure therapy.
It should be kept in mind that in spite of all these treatments, Prevention of keloids is better than cure.
HAPPY WORLD PLASTIC SURGERY DAY
