Pregnancy is not an illness or a disease. It is physiological.
A lot of women (and mostly their families) insist on bed rest throughout the course of pregnancy.
Myths and misconceptions are rife, on 'something going wrong' if a pregnant woman is allowed to work.
Well, surprise surprise!
Studies actually say that pregnancy outcomes are better if a woman remains active throughout the course of pregnancy. There is a lesser risk of gestational diabetes, hypertension, intrauterine growth restriction, and a greater chance of a va**nal delivery in such women. There is NO ROLE of bed rest, even after IVF.
Bed rest may, in fact, increase the risk of thromboembolic events, that is, risk of blood clots in the veins of the lower limb and elsewhere, especially in such women who are on high doses of Estradiol.
I always recommend women to stay active throughout their pregnancy, and keep themselves busy, physically and mentally.
Having said that, it is very important to remember that the bottomline is always to LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!
Especially in the first trimester, your hormones change, and your body takes some time getting used to them. You may not feel as comfortable or energetic as you initially were. It's okay to take it easy.
Exercise in pregnancy (except contact sports) can be continued safely after consultation with your doctor.
There are a few conditions in which your doctor may advise you bed rest, such as a threatened miscarriage, pre eclampsia, a low lying placenta, threatened preterm labour, cervical incompetence and so on.
