Sun salutations are total 8 asanas woven into a sequence of 12 steps for each side,right and left.The sun represents energy,power,vitality.As surya nadi runs along right side,you begin surya namaskar with your right side first.
Surya namaskar brings physical and mental strength,better command on your body,calmness of mind,balanced energies and inner piece.
You can start with 5 cycles in a day as beginners and can increase to 11 cycles a day.
Contraindications :
1. Bodily weakness : If one has general body weakness or muscle and bone weakness do not perform it.
2.Bad back : As spine expands and contracts putting pressure on your lower back and hips.So avoid if one has bad back or injured back.
3.Pregnant women avoid.
4. High blood pressure or heart problem : Should avoid but under proper guidance of Yoga teacher you can go slowly and carefully in postures.
5.Arthritis or wrist injury : should avoid.
