In this busy modern day life, we are always stretched too thin with work, responsibilities and trying to fulfill expectations from other and ourselves. Too much to do, too little time or energy. Isn’t it? Things seem to spin out of control and we get fatigued and stressed. We assume that stress in body and mind are a part of life. “Stress Management” became a buzz word in the west because it was assumed that stress is an unavoidable part of life, somehow to be swept under the carpet and keep suppressed as much as possible. Lots of books were also written on how “positive thinking” and other techniques could be used to keep your mind and body at peace. None of those work. We all have tried and given up on those at some point or other
The triggers for stress and discontent are typically external - like responsibilities, relationship issues, finance/career issues or many others, but the suffering is always within you, in your own mind. Isn't it? Then, how can you look for a solution outside of yourself?
Significant medical and clinical research is available showing that stress on mind slowly but surely also starts manifesting or aggravating issues for body. A whole lot of diseases fall under the category called “psychosomatic diseases” ( blood pressure, eczema, psoriasis, heart diseases, increased sugar etc.). Instead of going to the bottom of these, by addressing the issues in your mind and energy, we fallback on using a patch-work approach of addressing the physical manifestation of the issues than addressing the potential root cause.
Thankfully, modern research has also at the same time established that the age old techniques like meditation, breathing techniques ( pranayamas) go right at the root of these mind-body issues.
