Raising awareness on Hereditary angioedema. It is a group of disorders with recurrent attacks of angioedema. Onset of symptoms is usually during childhood. Children can have recurrent attacks of swellings at various sites including limbs, lips, chest and; sometimes even laryngeal and intestinal edema is also seen. Some of them may present as recurrent pain abdomen also. The angioedema will have no other characteristic signs of allergy like itching or redness of overlying skin. The attacks do not respond to traditional antihistamines, epinephrine or corticosteroids. Usually these attacks abort by themselves in 2-3 days. Clinicians should be aware of this condition because sometimes the patient may present with a life threatening attack of laryngeal edema and none of the traditional medicines will work. It is an Autosomal dominant condition, so we see similar complaints in other family members although severity may differ. Most patients do well on therapy.

For starters, I have created a checklist for symptoms which could help make a diagnosis of lupus. Lupus can be hard to diagnose because symptoms vary from person to person, can come and go over a long period of time and often imitate symptoms of other illnesses. It is important to know the warning signs and symptoms of lupus. This checklist is only meant to help you recognise the signs and symptoms of lupus and a guide for you to discuss your possible risk of lupus.
