Aging doesn’t just affect visible muscles — it also impacts the diaphragm, the primary muscle responsible for breathing.
As we age, the diaphragm can gradually weaken due to a natural process called sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss). This may reduce breathing efficiency, weaken coughing strength, and even affect core stability.
In women, post-menopausal estrogen decline may further contribute to this muscle weakening. The good news? The diaphragm can be trained and strengthened.
Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) and breathing exercises may help improve lung function, respiratory strength, and overall quality of life — especially in older adults.
