A breast biopsy is one of the most essential steps in accurately diagnosing breast cancer. I am Dr. Girija Patil, Breast Onco Surgeon at Noble Hospital, and I often tell my patients that no breast cancer diagnosis is complete without a biopsy.

A Core Needle Biopsy also known as a True-Cut Biopsy or Gun Biopsy, is a simple procedure performed under local anesthesia. There is no need for hospital admission, fasting, or major preparation. Using a specialized biopsy gun, a small tissue sample is collected from the suspicious area in the breast.

This small sample gives us extremely important information. It not only confirms whether cancer is present, but also tells us about hormone receptors and cancer markers such as ER, PR, and HER2. These details allow us to design a personalized and effective treatment plan tailored to each patient’s cancer type.

One of the biggest myths I hear from women is the fear that a biopsy may cause the tumor to grow or spread. This is completely false. Scientific research has repeatedly proven that a breast biopsy does not spread cancer. It is a safe, highly accurate, and essential diagnostic tool.

Imaging tests like mammography, sonography, or PET scans are helpful, but they cannot replace a biopsy. Only a biopsy provides the definitive diagnosis needed to start the right treatment at the right time.

If you or someone you know has been advised to undergo a breast biopsy, please do not delay. Early and accurate diagnosis saves lives.
