Janu Basti is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy used to treat knee pain and degenerative joint conditions. The name is derived from the Sanskrit words “Janu” (knee) and “Basti” (to hold or contain).
The Procedure
The treatment typically lasts 30–45 minutes and involves the following steps:
Preparation: A circular “well” or reservoir is built around the knee joint using a thick dough made from black gram (urad dal) flour.
Oil Pooling: Warm, medicated herbal oil (such as Mahanarayana, Ksheerabala, or Sahacharadi) is poured into this reservoir until it covers the kneecap.
Maintenance: The oil is kept at a constant warm temperature by periodically replacing or reheating it throughout the session.
Completion: The oil and dough are removed, followed by a gentle massage (Abhyanga) and sometimes herbal steam (Swedana) to enhance absorption.
Key Benefits
Pain & Inflammation Relief: The warmth and medicinal properties of the oil pe*****te deep into tissues to reduce swelling and chronic pain.
Lubrication: It restores synovial fluid, reducing friction and the “cracking” sound in joints.
Improved Mobility: It softens stiff ligaments and tendons, enhancing the knee’s range of motion.
Nourishment: Strengthens the muscles, bones, and cartilage to prevent further degeneration.
