HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.( HFMD)

Hand foot and mouth disease is a clinical syndrome which is characterized by maculopabular rash or vesicular rash of HANDS and FEET And inside MOUTH and sometimes ORAL ULCERS are also seen.

MOSTLY AFFECTING SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN OF AGE 3-10 years.
May affect bigger children and adults also.

CAUSATIVE AGENTS-
COXSACKIEVIRUS A16 and ENTEROVIRUS 71 are the most common virus.

INCUBATION PERIOD-
3-7 DAYS. Highly infectious in first 5 days.

MODE OF SPREAD-
1) Respiratory droplet ,
2) Feco oral ,

CLINICAL FEATURES-
1) FEVER is the first symptom to appear mostly.

2) Painful maculopabular/ vesicular rash on palms and soles.

3) Painful ORAL ULCERS and vesicles.

4) Generalized weakness and dehydration.

Symptoms lasts for 7-10 days and resolve by themselves without any major complications in majority of cases.

DIAGNOSIS-
1) Usually and almost always clinical,
2) Throat, stool and vesicular fluid sample cell culture and PCR

MANAGEMENT-
1) Management is supportive aiming lowering of fever, Pain management Usually with non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).

2) Management of dehydration.

3) Maintaining general hygiene and cleanliness.
