We all go through experiences when life throws curve balls our way and it feels impossible to be joyous and happy as before. Some life events bring uncomfortable emotions, which feel like they may never pass. In moments such as these, thinking or verbalising our state of mind with statements such as “I feel depressed today”, is not unheard of.
But, are you depressed?
Depression is not just sadness and sadness is not depression.
Feeling sad is an emotion, a part of life, something that at times is inevitable. Sadness can be triggered by upsetting situations like losing a job, loss of a loved one or a bad result. Feeling sad is a normal human emotion that is transient in nature. This means that along with sadness there is also space to feel joy, laughter and peace.
On the other hand depression is a serious mental health disorder. It is pervasive, persistent and deliberating.
Why is the correct usage important?
Using the term ‘Depression’ for normal emotions, like sadness, is not being gentle on yourself or others who battle living with this condition on a daily basis. Be kind to yourself and others.
Be mindful of your language.
Use words such as: Sad, Upset, Blue, Dejected, Unhappy, Gloomy
If you are upset or feeling gloomy, acknowledge the feeling. As yourself, what would help you feel supported in that moment? Hugging a pillow, wrapping something around your shoulders, cocooning yourself in a blanket, writing down your thoughts, cuddling with someone (your pet maybe?) or simply being in that moment till it passes.
If the feeling of low mood persists and hampers your day to day activities, do not hesitate to seek professional help.
