This Diwali I felt like sharing a story of a dear patient of mine and her fight towards light! The story is about a 50 year old lady who is living by herself almost 200KM away from Pune city. She was abandoned by her family and dunkard husband.She supports herself with difficulty.
About a year back she developed a problem in her eye which made her eye red and painful and slowly lost vision in one eye. She saw many local healers and doctors around her village. They gave her temporary drops and some advised that her eye needs to be removed as it is causing pain. She came for an opinion at DHM Pune about 11 months back .On examining her I felt she had a type of cancer of the eye which had spread on one eye & confirmed the same with a biopsy . She would require prolonged treatment with expensive eyedrops which clearly she couldnt afford.(She could barely pay for her bus tickets)Coupl of our students and myself gathered medicines for her .We made her promise that she will be regular with her checkups. The surgeries and treatment was offered free for her. It was a challenging case and i was bit worried if the treatment would work or not after all the effort.In the first 4 months she did not show much response and we were starting to give up hope and prepared to break the bad news to her that we may have to operate and remove her eye as the nasty disease could spread to the rest of her body. But thankfully like a ray of hope she came smiling the next month saying my pain has gone for the first time.And in 7 months she made steady progress,was cured & started working again.

After almost a year from the start of treatment she comes back with a wrapped Diwali gift. My first reaction was to scold her as she could have spend the money on something useful like her eye drops(Why is she wasting it on gifts!!).But as I opened the gift I was overwhelmed with emotion.The label read 750 Rs which is a huge amount for her I m sure.🥲

On Diwali I am treasuring and wearing the precious yellow kurta she gifted with pride, sense of purpose and gratefulness to the almighty for blessing us with education and the capacity to help such needy.
Happy Diwali!!May we all get rid of all evil( like this lady)and be blessed with happiness ,love and togetherness this festive season✨🙏☺️

Dear all,
This message is in view of the ongoing epidemic of conjunctivitis in the city. We are seeing an unusually huge number of cases this month.

Conjunctivitis or pink eye is an infection of the eyes with virus. The virus effects the inner transparent skin on the eye ball and causes lot of soreness, burning , itching, sticky discharge and pain which can last upto a week or 10 days.

This infection can spread very easily from person to person.
What you can do to prevent getting the infection and spread is : Do not touch your face when you are outdoors. Keep sanitising your hands or washing your hands with soap and water. This infection does not spread by looking at someone with red eyes. So there is no need to panic. Wear a mask if you have cold and cough too and sanitise your hands regularly to prevent spread. The virus can spread till upto 10 to 15 days after start of infection. Keep your towels soap etc seperate from others at home.
Most often the infection can be mild and will go away in a week or two . You must visit your eye doctor if there is pain, eyelid swelling, excess discharge or blurry vision.

Kindly do not self medicate or put random drops from medical store. The chemist may not know the side-effects of certain drops. We are observing a missuse of strong steroids in this condition which can harm your eyes .Your doctor will treat this condition according to the severity and part of eye involved. Some forms of red eyes may not be the usual conjunctivitis and can be due to other bacteria which requires treatment in a different manner.

If you have red eyes.Do not rub eyes. Wash your eyes with luke warm water to clean the discharge. Avoid using contact lenses during this period. Do not share eyemakeup. Protect your eyes with dark goggles or protective glasses. Give rest to your eyes from gadgets. Seek medical help as needed and take precautions against spread.
