मैत्रीकरुणामुदितोपेक्षाणां सुखदुःखपुण्यापुण्यविषयाणां भावनातश्चित्तप्रसादनम्॥
By cultivating an attitude of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the suffering, joy for the virtuous, and equanimity toward the non-virtuous, the mind becomes clear and ​peaceful.
​Patanjali Yoga Sutra 1.33

Maitrī (मैत्री) – Friendliness or loving-kindness (towards those who are happy)

Karuṇā (करुणा) – Compassion (towards those who are suffering)

Muditā (मुदिता) – Joy or appreciative gladness (towards the virtuous or those who are doing good)

Upekṣā (उपेक्षा) – Equanimity or non-judgmental detachment (towards those who do wrong or act unwisely)

Sukha (सुख) – Joyful or happy people

Duḥkha (दुःख) – Those in pain or distress

Puṇya (पुण्य) – Meritorious or virtuous actions

Apuṇya (अपुण्य) – Non-virtuous or unwholesome actions

Bhāvanātaḥ (भावनातः) – Through cultivation or mental attitude

Citta-prasādanam (चित्तप्रसादनम्) – Clarity, calmness, and purification of the mind

This sutra is about emotional hygiene—how to maintain inner peace amidst the variety of human experiences and relationships.

Patanjali suggests that our reactions to others can disturb our peace if not handled wisely. For example:


Your inner peace is sacred—protect it.

✨ Be kind to those who are happy.
✨ Show compassion to those in pain.
✨ Celebrate the goodness in others.
✨ Stay calm when others falter.

This is not just a mindset. It’s a powerful practice to protect and keep your peace unshaken by the world around you.
