I have never been a coffee drinker myself but “is there any downside to drinking coffee?” is probably one of the most frequent questions I am asked, given that I seem to be surrounded by both casual coffee drinkers as well as coffee aficionados. Unlike most of my other posts, I don’t have personal data to share on this topic (post #32), but I have to say that, as I dug into the published scientific literature, I was surprised at how much this beverage has been researched and yet the mechanisms behind why it works isn’t completely understood.

When I first found out in late 2015 that I had heart disease, I was frankly very fearful about what that meant for my lifespan. That fear prompted me to make some very extreme changes to my lifestyle, including completely eliminating all sugar from my diet, dramatically reducing my carb intake, and other such drastic steps. Unsurprisingly, all my markers got significantly better within a three month period, but I also found the sacrifices I needed to make to stay healthy quite unsustainable. I joked with my wife that if living longer was the goal, I had achieved it because those three months felt like three years. I realized that my fear for my health had to be channeled into something that I would be willing to continue for the long term and maybe even enjoy the process. Today’s post ( #31) illustrates some examples of the experiments that have allowed me to eat foods that I enjoy while not adversely affecting my blood and body composition markers.

Today’s post ( #30) is an analysis of the various interventions for longevity and healthspan, that I have read or heard about over the years, with the objective being to provide you my take on whether there is enough proven science behind it or not. In my research on these topics, I am ideally looking for interventions that have been shown to work on humans in well designed clinical trials but I am willing to consider anything that has shown good potential in early trials, as long as the downside for side effects and unintended consequences is very low.

Today’s post ( #28) is on understanding the effectiveness of sugar substitutes for long term weight loss, blood sugar control, and other health benefits or if they are neutral or even harmful. Over the years, I have seen enough ads for the various artificial sweeteners (Equal, Splenda, Sweet’N Low, etc.) as well as been bombarded by reels / videos from social media influencers touting the benefits of the more naturally occurring sweeteners like Stevia, and I wanted to do my own literature research to determine if it was worth actually experimenting with it. If you use these sweeteners or are curious about their impact on your blood markers, you will find this post relevant.

Today’s post ( #27) is about deciphering the data our wearables, such as the Apple Watch, FitBit, Oura Ring, etc,. are putting out every minute of every day, in a way that one can do something actionable with. People either find the data from wearables too overwhelming or they reach incorrect conclusions; I hope that by the end of this post you will have a better sense for which parameters from the wearables to focus on, how to interpret them correctly and what specific things you can do to improve them.

Today’s post ( #26) is about a question, the answer to which has probably been the most eye opening for me over the last ten years, but more more importantly a life-changing one: Does my healthcare system truly care about my health? TLDR: It is becoming increasingly difficult to answer that question with a yes. For more on why that is the case and what you can do about it, read on …

Today’s post ( #25) is on a topic that some of us have no issue with and can therefore take for granted while some others face a lot of frustration dealing with. And that is the question of why we can’t seem to get rid of that excess weight in spite of having done everything we could think of doing.

If you have dealt with lower back pain or had trouble going back to sleep in the middle of the night or dealt with side effects of medications not realizing it was the medicine that was the culprit, today's post ( #24) is about my experiences with each of the above and practical lifestyle based solutions that helped me deal with them. I hope you find it practically actionable and as always, I would love any feedback on it.

This blog post covers the fascinating world of epigenetics and looks at how our lifestyle and environment impact our health over the long term through continuous modifications being made to our epigenetics. When viewed through this lens, it will hopefully make it clearer why making small changes are practically more sustainable than doing anything more extreme or complex. As always, please forward this to anyone you think might be interested and send me any feedback you may have.

This post ( #22) took a while to write because it is both a complex topic as well as an important one. It required simplification of difficult-to-understand concepts but without dumbing it down to the point of being incorrect. Unlike my preventive health posts, the cancer screening test I write about in this post is something I have researched a lot over the last almost two years but have not taken the leap of getting myself tested. Thanks to a nudge from Sanjay Bhargava, I was forced to write down my thought process, how it has evolved over the last couple of years and where I stand on it now. This is also the type of topic that there will be widely varying views on; as always I don’t claim that my approach is right for everyone but rather it provides a transparent view of my modus operandi and in the process hopefully enables you to think about things you might otherwise not have. Hope you find this useful and as always, please share it with anyone that you think could benefit from it

As we get older, our risk of injuries goes up. These injuries can be because of playing an intense sport or simply because we sneezed a little too hard. The problem with injuries is that they make it hard to keep up our daily routines which leads to long term physical and mental health issues. Today's post covers some recommendations, based on my personal experience, on ways to both avoid injuries as far as possible as well as dealing with them when they happen, so you recover from them sooner. As always, please subscribe to the blog posts and share it with any friends that you think would benefit from reading it.
