Today is World Sjogrens day. Sjogrens syndrome is an autoimmune disease where there is dryness of our mouth and eyes leading to frequent dental caries and a feeling as if sand has got into our eyes. Along with this there may be joint pain, rashes on feet and arms, and worse complications in the internal organs.
Although rare, it affects middle aged women more frequently. Unless there is awareness about this disease, early diagnosis will always elude us.

Lupus is a difficult disease to diagnose and manage.... and only a patient knows how it is to live with.
Every Lupus patient has a story, not just a medical history. This World Lupus awareness month, I want to try to make people aware of this condition...so that patients approach us early for a much better management of their disease.

Depression and anxiety in rheumatic disease is a reality many patients face, but are hesitant to talk about. Patients suffering from arthritis in their productive ages often have mental health issues and these are stigmatized...they fear being shunned.
We at Bharati hospital and as flag bearers of our organization Women's health in Rheumatology WHIRA, are building a support group for such patients: mind-joint interface or Man-sandhi.

Autoimmune diseases are often unpredictable in their course and evolve as time passes. They are difficult to diagnose and although rare, can affect a young life badly. Arthritis may be the first symptom...often ignored.
Early diagnosis and patient examination is the key to a successful outcome. The recent death of a young actress due to dermatomyositis is a sad reminder of how these illnesses can be.
If you or your family/ friends have any of these symptoms Friday 23rd Feb 5.30pm at my OPD Apollo clinic Wanowrie would be a good time to check it out.

April is marked as the Rheumatological disease awareness month.
Many amongst us are yet not aware of what diseases come within purview of Rheumatology and which kind of doctor a rheumatologist is.
Rheumatology encompasses those diseases which affect your joints as well as other organs...and these can be deadly. Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, scleroderma, myositis , mixed connective tissue disease, osteoarthritis ...to name a few.
A rheumatologist is a physician who deals with diagnosis and specific treatment of these diseases.
These can affect all ages though mostly in the productive age groups. So it's important for patients to seek help timely.

Lupus can be an enigmatic disease...can come in so many forms ...it's easy to diagnose if it comes as the typical butterfly cheek rash plus joint pain...the problem comes when lupus disguises itself and hides behind common ailments such as anemia, convulsions, fever.
Timely referral to a rheumatologist is a must whenever lupus is suspected.
