Gestalt vs. Trait method in handwriting analysis: the eternal debate, or as we like to call it, โThe Battle of the Big Picture vs. the Microscopic Detective.โ Whenever we receive inquiries for our courses, a brief explanation of the syllabus is also asked for, and we find ourselves explaining the Macro (Gestalt) and Micro (Trait) aspects of the beginners course. Here's an example we use:
Imagine two handwriting analysts walk into your office and your notes are just lying around. The Trait analyst immediately zooms in on a lowercase letter and says "aha! a fiction reader!", while the Gestalt analyst is busy standing back, squinting at the entire page, and murmuring, โI senseโฆ optimism, with a hint of secretiveness, and possibly a love of camping.โ
The Trait method is like a handwriting CSI: every loop, hook, and slant is a clue, catalogued and cross-examined. Did you forget to dot your i? Did you underline your name? The French invented this approach, possibly because they appreciate a good detailโjust ask anyone whoโs tried to order coffee in Paris ๐
On the other hand, the Gestalt method was born in Germany -- it's all about the overall vibe. Analysts look at your writing like itโs a modern art masterpiece: โItโs not the letters, itโs the movement, the energy, the existential angst!โ They see your handwriting as a wholeโpage layout, movement, and all. Itโs less โtell me about your loopsโ and more โletโs discuss your auraโ ๐ค
In our beginner's course, we cover both theories and methods of training, and by the end of Level-1, you'll be shocked at what you'll be able to tell from someone's writing and how useful the subject proves to be in so many daily contexts.
