I'm blown away by the effort my amazing team put into a surprise birthday celebration for me. They even surprised me with a nutrition-themed cake, which was the perfect touch! Having such dedicated and enthusiastic people around me is the greatest reward I could ask for. Your hard work and care make every day special, and I’m beyond grateful to have each of you on this journey with me. Thank you for making it an unforgettable celebration!

Sometimes, something simple ends up having a profound effect on you...

On a short holiday break, while sightseeing, we walked into a crowded food joint for a meal. The food was fine, but what left a mark on us was this guy, a simple waiter who was just taking orders from people and serving food. In this joint full of people, most waiters were just about managing to get the work done, but not him! He managed to smile at everyone, and answer all question in a distinctly happy, almost sing-song mood. He had a spring in his step and a literally infectious air of happiness about him. All these little things elated everyones mood. I couldn't help but notice the huge impact of joyfulness. I made sure to let the owner know about his good work and clicked this photo to remind myself to always have such positivity.

Rather than the holiday, this small encounter has given me more energy and enthusiasm to get back to my own work. With absolutely nothing but your demeanour and a love for what you do, you could make such a difference! 🙂

I'm always keen on checking out food varieties, especially natural ones like fruits and vegetables. Recently a dear friend shared some "Blue Java Bananas" from their own farm, and I was very happy to receive them.

These bananas are bluish green in colour when unripe and turn pale yellow when they ripen. Like all other varities of bananas, they are also rich in anti-oxidants and a good source of fiber, potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C & minerals. They help improve your digestive as well as cardiovascular health. They will uplift your mood and make your skin glow!

The most notable thing about them though, is the texture and flavour. They have a fantastic ice-cream like texture and the flavour reminds mildly of vanilla. This makes them an excellent healthier alternative for ice cream or smoothies. If you come across them, definitely try them out!

As winter casts it gentle chill, the kitchens come alive with a vibrant array of seasonal delicacies. Today I want to highlight a few such traditional recipes that I've had the good fortune of enjoying on the day of Bhogi. These dishes are loved at our home and are a great example of how seasonal foods provide health & happiness.

1. Tilwadi: Nutty Elegance Packed with Goodness

Tilwadi, a traditional sweet made from sesame seeds and jaggery, is a powerhouse of nutrition. Sesame seeds are rich in healthy fats, protein, and essential minerals like iron and magnesium. Jaggery, a natural sweetener, is a source of iron and provides a quick energy boost. Together, Tilgul not only satisfies your sweet cravings but also contributes to overall well-being.

2. Alewadi
Ginger is known for its warming effect on the body. It also has respiratory benefits. It soothes sore throats & reduce congestion. Alewadi or Alepak is a traditional zingy sweet, great for cold days.

3. Bhogi Bhaji: Winter Vegetables for Immunity Boost

Bhogi Bhaji, a delightful medley of winter vegetables, is a nutritional treasure trove. Spinach and fenugreek leaves are abundant in vitamins A and C, crucial for boosting immunity during the colder months. I make it a point to add as many beans & other seasonal veggies (matar, pavta, green harbhara, walpapdi, peanuts, carrot, brinjal) as I can get locally. These additions not only enhances the flavor but also brings potent antibacterial properties, making Bhogi Bhaji an excellent choice for warding off winter blues.

4. Bajra Bhakri: Gluten-Free Goodness and Dietary Fiber

Bajra Bhakri, the rustic flatbread made from bajra flour, is a gluten-free alternative that offers numerous health benefits. Rich in dietary fiber, Bajra Bhakri aids digestion and helps maintain a healthy gut. The complex carbohydrates in bajra provide a sustained release of energy, keeping you warm and energetic throughout the winter days. Its best had with a spoonful of homemade churned butter. Our bodies need a bit more good quality fats in winters and a spoonful of churned butter is a lovely addition that goes great with this bhakri.

5. Haldi Sabji: Turmeric's Golden Magic

A friend presented me with traditional Rajasthani Haldi Sabji. It is indeed a burst of color and flavor in itself, and it is also a nutritional powerhouse to keep the sniffles away in the winter.

These are just few winter dishes of many marvellous ones made throughout the country. Each one is a testament to the rich cultural and nutritional heritage. So, indulge in this symphony of flavors, and let the goodness of these winter delights nourish your body and soul.

Kulith - A healthy comfort food

In my recent trip to Konkan, I was pleasantly surprised to be served an authentic “कुळथाचं कढण” at one of the upmarket hotels. It was great to see local traditional recipes also finding their places in the “fine dining” menus. A sight like this would have been highly improbable a decade or two ago, when local food was considered "downmarket". Slowly, we are seeing awareness about the importance of traditional and local foods grow, and although the overall food market is still rife with unhealthy practices, these small changes are indeed heartening.

Kulith(horse gram) is a local staple used all over India. In Maharashtra (especially Konkan), Kulith pithla, amti & kadhan are common traditional recipes. Kulith is rich in proteins and fibers. It is known to reduce bad cholesterol & is diabetic-friendly. It boosts immunity & also aids recovery. I always recommend Kulith for all my patients who are recovering from any ailments. Sportspeople and kids should have it frequently as it increases stamina. It is also helpful for asthmatics patients. In general it is an excellent pulse that can be consumed by all ages and has immense health benefits.

Here are two of my recipes for preparations based on Kulith, one for winter, and the other for summer.

Kulith Pithla - Ideal during winters
- Add Kulith flour (around 2 Tbsp) to water (200 ml) & mix well (till all lumps of flour are dissolved).
- Heat 1/2 tsp oil in a pan/kadhai, add crushed garlic(4-5 cloves), and other tadka (mohri, hing, halad, kadhipatta). You can also add chopped onion.
- Add tadka to the kulith mixture. add 2-3 Kokum petals, salt, and let it cook for 5-6 minutes till you achieve a consistency that you prefer. You may need to adjust water a bit to achieve the right amount of thickness.
- Garnish with coriander and serve.
Goes well with Bhakari as well as steamed rice.

Kulith Kadhan - Excellent summer drink for its cooling ability (due to addition of buttermilk), can also be had throughout the year

- Sprout a handful of Kulith overnight
- Pressure cook the sprouts with water (add around 200 ml water)
- Strain the sprouts, and get the strained water (stock) in a separate bowl
- Crush the sprouts and add them to the stock
- Add 100 ml buttermilk, 1 tbsp besan to the stock
- Give tadka with Jeera, Kadhipatta, Chillies, Hing and Haldi
- Boil the mixture for 10 min till soup-like consistency is achieved. Serve slightly warm or at room temperature.
Can be had with rice or just as is like Solkadhi.
