The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases across India. However, the Ministry has assured the public that this virus is not new and poses no unusual threat. First identified in 2001, HMPV has been circulating globally, including in India, for over two decades.
Union Health Minister Shri J.P. Nadda addressed the nation, reassuring citizens that the virus is well-known and health systems are vigilant. "HMPV is not a new virus. It has been circulating for many years. Our health systems are fully prepared," he stated.
What is HMPV?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that commonly causes mild cold-like symptoms. It affects people of all ages but can be more severe in infants and individuals with weakened immune systems. While most adults have developed immunity over the years, first-time exposure in infants can lead to more serious symptoms. The virus typically circulates between November and May.
Symptoms of HMPV:
Runny nose
Cough
Fever
Shortness of breath
Wheezing (in severe cases)
While most cases are mild, the virus can cause serious respiratory issues in vulnerable populations.
Prevention:
Practice good hand hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap.
Avoid close contact with infected individuals.
Cover your mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
Disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.
Current Situation in India
India has detected five HMPV cases in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Nagpur, with health experts stating that there is no reason to panic. In Nagpur, two suspected cases were reported, but both children have been treated and discharged. Shashikant Shambharkar, Deputy Director of Health in Nagpur, confirmed, “Two suspected HMPV patients have been found in Nagpur. One of these patients is 7 years old, and the other is 13 years old. The reports of both these patients, initially tested positive at a private hospital, are being sent to AIIMS Nagpur for further examination. Both patients have been treated and discharged.”
Public Advisory
*What is HPMV and How much should we be worry about it*
The Health Ministry has urged citizens to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures such as maintaining good respiratory hygiene, wearing masks in crowded places, and seeking medical attention if respiratory symptoms persist. The ministry also emphasized the importance of strengthening immunity through proper nutrition and vaccination against other respiratory illnesses.
Guidelines Issued for Hospitals:
Prompt reporting of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases.
Strict isolation protocols for suspected cases.
Availability of essential medicines like Paracetamol and Bronchodilators for mild cases.
Maintain documentation of cases for better monitoring.
Dr. Vandana Bagga, Director General of Health Services, convened a meeting with chief district medical officers and the state program officer of IDSP in Delhi to discuss preparedness to address respiratory illnesses. As part of the recommendations, hospitals have been instructed to promptly report ILI and SARI cases through the IHIP Portal.
States like Delhi, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh are increasing preparedness, testing, and raising awareness among the public. Despite the detection, experts assure that HMPV is not causing a widespread outbreak.
